Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Radiocarbon Curve" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the calibrated radiocarbon date figure in an archaeology field report. Quiet, exact and scholarly: a pale bone page, thin ink, one soft gray shape, and the confidence ranges spelled out underneath like a lab result.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F4F0E6 (pale bone) for the whole canvas.
- Ink for the data line, axis, title and header box: #2B2A26.
- Area fill under the main line: #C9C4B8 at 75% opacity.
- Context ribbon: #7FA3C4 at 28% opacity with a 1px #7FA3C4 center line; its small labels in #4E7597.
- One accent for the single callout (mode or peak): #8C3B2E.
- Secondary text and the lighter bracket: #6F6A5F. Hairline rules and gridlines: #D8D1C1.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Alegreya 700 for the title (27px, ink, a sentence stating the finding) and for the specimen code in the header box (30px).
- Alegreya Sans for everything else: subtitle 15px 400 #6F6A5F stating measure, unit and context; tick labels 13px 500 ink on x and 12px #6F6A5F on y; small caps-style labels 10.5 to 11px 700 uppercase with 1.8 to 2px letter-spacing; bracket labels 12px; callout 12.5px 700 in #8C3B2E; notes and source 12px, with the axis title in italic.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Top-left, a boxed header 188 x 68 px with a 1.2px ink border and a 0.8px divider 22px from the top: an uppercase label row ("SAMPLE" left, lab number right) above the big specimen code and its measured value.
- Title and subtitle to the right of the box, starting at x 268. A 1px #D8D1C1 rule under the header block.
- A thin context band about 70px tall above the plot (the faint blue ribbon), then the main plot from y 250 to 438, then two rows of range brackets beneath the axis, then a footer rule with the source on the left and the axis title in italics on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 0.8px #D8D1C1 gridlines at round values with right-aligned y labels 10px left of the plot; no y-axis line.
- A 1.2px ink baseline with 6px major ticks every 50 units, labeled, and 3px minor ticks every 10 units.

Marks:
- Line chart: a thin 1.4px ink line with round joins and straight segments at a dense (yearly) resolution, over the #C9C4B8 area fill down to zero. For multiple series, keep the first in ink with fill and draw the others as 1.2px unfilled lines in #6F6A5F and #7FA3C4, labeled directly at their peaks.
- Bar chart: slim ink bars (50% of the band) with square corners over a #C9C4B8 background band per category; value labels 12px above each bar.
- Range brackets: under the axis, one row per confidence level. The 68.3% row uses 3px ink brackets, the 95.4% row 1.2px #6F6A5F brackets; each is a horizontal line with 6px upturned ends and its range and share of probability centered 17px below ("1167–1209 CE (46.8%)"). The level is written bold at the left edge, and the shares in each row must add up to exactly that level (find the ranges on a fine grid, then round the shares so they sum to it; never print 95.5% under a 95.4% row).
- Callout: a 1px #8C3B2E tick 18px above the highest point with a bold red label to its right.
- Context ribbon: a smooth band 8px thick with a dashed (3 on, 3 off) horizontal reference line and a 12px pale reference band behind it, labeled in italics.

Avoid: saturated colors, drop shadows, gradients, heavy borders beyond the header box, rounded corners, legends when direct labels fit, and a second numeric axis for the context ribbon.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the bracket ranges and their percentages are computed from the data, the ribbon labels do not sit on the ribbon, the header box text is aligned left and right inside its box, and the area fill reads as soft gray, not beige.
