Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Radio Hour" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a walnut console radio in a 1930s living room, the dial glowing amber. Warm, dim and nostalgic, with the data line glowing like the dial light and ivory sponsor tags hung on it.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Cabinet: #261811 (dark walnut) for the canvas, with an inner panel shaded diagonally from #2E1D14 through #261811 to #1D120C.
- Dial amber: #F2A93B for the title, the data line and its glow, dial ticks and the final value.
- Ivory: #EFE3C8 for tags, point rings, category labels and dial numbers.
- Grille brown: #5A3A26 for the cabinet frame, dial rim and the zero line. Inner frame line and gridlines #3E2819.
- Muted text: #B59A7A. Dial needle: #E0533A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Limelight for the title only (31px amber, sentence case, stating the finding).
- Josefin Sans for everything else: subtitle 15px #B59A7A stating measure, unit and period; axis values 13px; category labels 14px 600 ivory with 1px letter-spacing; tag text 11px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing in walnut; final value 19px 700 amber with a 11px "thousand" under it; footer 12px, brand line 600 with 3px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- Cabinet frame: a rounded rectangle inset 12px (radius 34, 3px #5A3A26 stroke) and a second inset 24px (radius 24, 1.5px #3E2819).
- Top left: a half-moon tuning dial, radius 94 centered at (150, 148): dark #170E09 face, 2.5px grille-brown rim, an amber radial glow rising from the hub, 25 amber ticks (every fourth longer and 1.6px), station numbers in 10px 600 ivory around the arc, a thin red needle and a small hub; "KILOCYCLES" in 9px spaced caps under it.
- Title block to the right of the dial at x 282: title baseline y 84, subtitle y 116, then a key line: a small ivory tag glyph and "New sponsor signs on" in 13px ivory.
- Plot from x 100 to 900, y 206 to 494; footer at y 556.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis line. Four 1px #3E2819 gridlines (the zero line 1.5px #5A3A26), values right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- Year labels centered under each year's points, with short 8px tick marks between years hanging below the baseline.

Marks and effects:
- Line chart: a smooth monotone line, 3.2px amber with round caps, over a 7px amber copy at 75% opacity blurred with a 6px Gaussian blur (the dial glow), and an amber area fill fading from 26% to 0% opacity. Sponsor events get a 5px walnut dot with a 2px ivory ring, a 1px ivory leader rising 52px, and an ivory luggage tag (22px tall, pointed left end with a 2.5px walnut punch hole) hung up and to the left so it never covers the rising line. The last point is a solid amber dot with its value label to the right.
- Bar chart: amber bars about 55% of the band with 3px rounded tops, each with the same soft amber glow behind it at 50% opacity, value labels in Josefin Sans 700 amber above, and ivory tags hung above the bars where sponsors joined.

Avoid: pure black, cool colors, hard white, thick gridlines, a boxed legend, and tags that overlap the line or each other.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the glow is soft and not clipped at the plot edges, each tag's text fits inside it, and the dial reads as a dial at thumbnail size.
