Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Pulp Circulation" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a 1960s newsstand comic book. Yellowed, slightly aged newsprint, cheap four-color printing with visible Ben-Day dots, bold hand-lettered display type and chunky black ink. Nostalgic but tidy, never messy.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F2E6C4 (yellowed newsprint), with a faint fiber speckle (tiny dots in #D9C99E and #E8D7AE at 50 to 60% opacity) and a soft radial vignette fading to #C9AE72 at 45% opacity at the corners.
- Ink: #1A1712 for data lines, borders, labels and the title.
- Ben-Day dots: #E3A48C circles, radius 2.1px on a 9px grid rotated 45 degrees, at 55% opacity, filling only the plot panel.
- Caption boxes: #FFF1A6 (pale yellow) with #1A1712 borders.
- Accent: #C8312B (masthead red) for the issue number, a short rule under the subtitle and the publisher line.
- Secondary text: #6B5E45.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bangers for the title (38px, uppercase, 1px letter-spacing, stating the finding), the corner box numbers (24 to 26px) and the publisher line (16px red).
- Comic Neue for everything else: subtitle 15px 700 in #6B5E45, axis labels 14px 700 in ink, caption box text 13.5px (first line 700 uppercase, second line 400), source 13px italic.

Layout:
- A cover-corner box at top left (72 x 84px, 2.5px ink border, split by a 2px rule): "NO." in 11px, the issue number in red Bangers, and the cover price below in black Bangers.
- Title and subtitle to the right of the corner box, then a 210 x 4px red rule.
- The plot is a framed comic panel (about 826 x 330px) with a 3px ink border, the Ben-Day field inside it.
- Footer: source at the left, publisher name in red Bangers at the right.

Axes and grid:
- Y labels outside the panel on the left ("200k" style), 14px bold. Three gridlines, 1px ink dashed 2 on 5 at 55% opacity. No axis lines besides the panel border.
- X: 6px tick marks below the panel at every year, labels every third year.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 4px #1A1712 line with round joins, straight segments between monthly points. Under it an ink-bleed copy: same path at 6.5px, 35% opacity, roughened with fractal noise (baseFrequency 0.9, displacement scale 2.6) and blurred 0.9px, so the line looks printed on absorbent paper. Mark key points with a 5.5px pale yellow circle with a 2px ink ring.
- Bar chart: flat #1A1712 bars with a 2px ink outline, or #C8312B for the single highlighted bar, over the same Ben-Day panel; square corners, value labels in Comic Neue 700 above each bar.

Labels and annotation:
- Key events get caption boxes: #FFF1A6 fill, 2px ink border, a solid ink offset shadow 3px right and 3px down, two lines of text, joined to the data point by a 1.5px ink leader. Place boxes in empty space so they never cover the line.

Avoid: gradients on marks, glossy effects, modern sans fonts, more than one red element group, and clutter from too many caption boxes (three at most).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the Ben-Day dots are visible but quieter than the line, caption boxes don't cover the data, and the corner box reads as a cover corner.
