Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Price Ladder" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a merchandising review from a considered home store. Warm paper, soft taupe ranges, one deep forest green for the house brand and a single rust mark for the median. Editorial serif title, quiet sans labels.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FBF8F3 (warm white).
- Range zones, lightest to darkest: #E3D8CA (good), #CBBBA8 (better), #A8957F (best).
- House brand: #2F5D46 (forest green). Median tick: #B5532A (rust).
- Title and category names: #2A2622. Subtitle, end labels and axis labels: #7A7168. Faint text: #B3A99E. Gridlines and rules: #E6DFD5.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Instrument Serif 400 for the title only: 34px, stating the finding.
- Figtree for everything else, tabular figures on numbers: eyebrow 11.5px 600 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing in #7A7168; subtitle 14px 400; category names 14px 600; range end labels 11.5px 500; house median labels 11px 700 in green; legend 12px 600; axis labels 12px 500; source 12px 400.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow, title and subtitle stacked at the top left.
- A compact legend at the top right in two rows: three 16 x 10 swatches "Good", "Better", "Best", then a green 16 x 5 pill "House brand" and a 2.5px rust tick "Category median" (legend text in the matching colors).
- Category names in a left column; the plot runs from about x 236 to x 852, one row per category every 40px.
- A 1px #E6DFD5 rule above a one-line source note at the bottom.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal value axis on a log scale when prices span more than a decade (ticks at 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,000), otherwise linear; labels centered below the plot.
- Vertical 1px #E6DFD5 gridlines at each tick behind the bars; a 1px #B3A99E baseline under the last row.

Marks:
- Bar chart: floating horizontal range bars, 14px tall with 3px outer corners, from the lowest to the highest value in each row. Split each bar into three zones at the thirds of its price points (good, better, best colors). Draw a 1.2px #FBF8F3 tick at every individual price point inside the bar. Cross the bar with a 2.5px rust tick at the median, extending 4px above and below. Under each bar, 6px lower, draw the house brand's own range as a 5px green pill with a hollow 3.6px circle (1.8px green stroke, background fill) at its median and "median $64" printed right after the pill. Print the entry and premium prices just outside each end.
- Line chart: draw each series as a 2px taupe (#A8957F) line with small #FBF8F3-filled dots, the featured series as a 2.5px forest green line with its median value labelled, and a rust dashed horizontal reference line for the overall median.

Avoid: saturated colors beyond the green and rust, gradients, shadows, a dark background, a boxed legend, and more than one rust mark per row.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the title count matches the rows where the house median sits below the category median, the log ticks are evenly spaced per decade, the zone boundaries fall on real price points, and no median label runs into the next row's labels.
