Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Prep Sheet" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a laminated kitchen prep sheet on grid paper, filled in with grease pencil before service. Printed structure is crisp; everything the cook added is hand-made and slightly rough.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Surround: #C8D2DA; the sheet: #EEF3F7 (pale blue grid paper), inset 8px with 14px rounded corners.
- Grid: minor lines every 16px in #D5E0EA (0.6px), major lines every 80px in #B9CBDB (0.9px).
- Header band: solid #2E7D4F, 60px tall across the top, with white text.
- Grease pencil (bars and handwriting): #2B4C9B. Shortfall notes: #C23B22.
- Printed black (par ticks, axis, labels): #161A1D. Secondary printed text: #4F5B66.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Work Sans for all printed text: header band left 20px 700 uppercase with 2.5px letter-spacing, right 15px 600 uppercase with 3px letter-spacing; title 24px 700 in #161A1D stating the finding; subtitle 14px 400 explaining the encoding; category labels 12.5px 600 uppercase with 0.8px letter-spacing, right-aligned; scale numbers 11px 500; column headers 10px 700 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing.
- Kalam for handwriting: counts "36 / 40" 17px 700 in #2B4C9B beside each bar, "short 6" 16px 700 in #C23B22 after it, sign-off initials 22px 700.

Layout:
- Header band, then title and subtitle, then the chart rows. A printed scale runs across the top of the plot (ticks and numbers above a 1px black line).
- Each category row is about 30px tall with a 0.8px #B9CBDB separator line.
- A "CHEF SIGN-OFF" box (124 x 58, 1.2px black border, white at 60%, a labeled header strip) in the bottom right corner with handwritten initials and time.
- "Source: illustrative data" 11.5px bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- The grid paper is the only background grid; no extra gridlines. Scale ticks are 6px black strokes.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars 17px tall, filled by grease pencil: a #2B4C9B base at 22% opacity overlaid with dense diagonal strokes (about 2.6px apart, 1.3 to 2.4px wide, 60 to 95% opacity, round caps) clipped to a shape whose right end is uneven (jitter the end points by up to 3px). Targets or par levels are crisp printed #161A1D ticks 2.4px wide extending 5px above and below the bar. Handwritten counts sit 14px past whichever is further right, the bar end or the tick.
- Line chart: a 3px #2B4C9B grease pencil line drawn as two slightly offset rough passes (70% and 40% opacity), hand-drawn dots at each point, and targets as a crisp printed black stepped or dashed line; handwritten values next to key points in Kalam.

Texture and effects:
- Lamination: a diagonal white gloss sweep over the whole sheet (linear gradient, peak 20% opacity at the middle, transparent elsewhere) and a 1.5px white inner edge at 70% opacity.

Avoid: smooth solid fills for data, typeset data labels, more than one hand color besides the red shortfall note, and shadows.

When you're done, render the chart and check that hatching stays inside each bar, par ticks remain visible over the hatching, handwritten notes never collide with the next bar or the sign-off box, and the title's counts match the data.
