Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Positioning Report" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a weekly market positioning sheet from a commodities research desk. Condensed, businesslike headlines on pale gray-green paper, two strong opposing colors for long and short, and small italic notes that read like a careful analyst's footnotes.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #EEF1EA for the canvas, with an 8px #2A5234 band across the very top edge.
- Positive / long / above-zero marks: #2A5234 (hunter green).
- Negative / short / below-zero marks: #C4602F (rust).
- Ink (title, zero line, net ticks, note box): #1C211B.
- Secondary text: #5F665C. Gridlines: #CDD3C6.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Oswald for the eyebrow (500, 13px, 2.2px letter-spacing, uppercase, green), the title (600, 34px, ink, sentence case, stating the finding), legend keys (500, 13px uppercase, 1.2px letter-spacing), group labels (600, 16px uppercase, 1.4px letter-spacing), axis and date labels (400 to 500, 12 to 13px) and the source line.
- Lora italic for the subtitle (15.5px, #5F665C), the boxed report-date note (13px, ink), per-group net readouts (600, 14px, green if positive, rust if negative), change notes and the footer note (12 to 12.5px).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 94, subtitle at y 124.
- A legend row at y 162: 14px square swatches for each color and a short 20 x 2.2px ink bar for the net tick. On the right of the same row, a 1px ink box about 300 x 36px holding the report-date note, centered.
- The plot spans x 104 to 904 with the zero line near mid-height (y 364). Pad the value domain past the largest bar on both sides (here -120 to +100) so no bar reaches the bottom gridline or the period labels. Categories form 3 groups side by side with 34px gaps; each group label sits top-left above its group with its latest net readout right-aligned on the same line.
- Under each group, only the first and last period labels, joined by a thin rule, with the change over the span in Lora italic in the middle.
- Footer: a 0.8px ink rule at y 562, an italic note on the left, "Source: ..." in Oswald on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Signed y labels ("+50", "-50") in Oswald 13px on the left, the zero label bold ink. Gridlines 0.8px #CDD3C6 at round values. The zero line is 1.4px ink, running full width.

Marks:
- Bar chart: diverging square-cornered bars, about 62% of each slot. The positive component rises from zero in green, the negative component hangs below in rust, and a 2.2px ink tick 3px wider than the bar on each side marks the net (sum) value. Group bars by category with the periods in time order inside each group.
- Line chart: two series drawn as 2.5px lines, green for the positive series and rust for the negative (plotted below zero), with the net as a 1.5px ink line and small 3px ink dots at each period. Shade between each colored line and zero at 15% opacity. Use the same grouped small-multiple layout if there are several categories.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, shadows, 3D, extra colors beyond green, rust and ink, a right-hand axis, and legends placed inside the plot.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every net tick equals long minus short, the tallest negative bar stays above the period labels, and the boxed note and legend do not collide.
