Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Pollinator Count" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the results page of a careful farm biodiversity survey. Warm, outdoorsy and trustworthy: meadow-cream paper, flower-and-insect colors, a humanist serif headline, a stated method, and small hand-drawn insect glyphs as the only ornament.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #F7F3E3 (pale meadow cream).
- Series, in this order: #E2B53A (pollen yellow), #8A5A9E (clover purple), #5F8A4A (leaf green), #7AA3C2 (sky blue).
- All text, the value axis line and the insect glyphs: #4B3621 (deep bark brown). Secondary text: #7D6B55.
- Alternating row bands: #ECEDD3 (faint green). Gridlines and rules: #DCD6BE.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Alegreya 700, 29px, bark brown for the title, stating the finding; Alegreya 700 18px for row (category) names.
- Alegreya Sans 400 17px for the subtitle (measure, place, period).
- Alegreya Sans italic 14px #7D6B55 for a one-line survey method note directly under the subtitle ("Method: 24 timed ten-minute counts ...").
- Alegreya Sans 500 15px for legend labels, 500 12px bark brown for bar values, 13 to 13.5px #7D6B55 for axis numerals and row totals, 12.5px for the source and footnote.

Layout:
- 48px side margins. Title baseline 66, subtitle 94, method note 116.
- Legend row at y about 160: for each series, an insect glyph (about 24 x 28 px), a 16 x 11 color swatch with 2px radius, then the label; items on a fixed 164px pitch. A 1px #DCD6BE rule under the legend at y 186.
- Category labels in a left column (x 56): the name, and beneath it the row total ("415 visits") in 13.5px #7D6B55. Bars start at x 196.
- Footer at baseline 578: "Source: ..." left, a definition footnote in italic right.

Axes and grid:
- A 1px bark-brown value axis line at zero; vertical gridlines every 50 units, 0.8px #DCD6BE dashed 2 on 3 off; numerals centered under the plot. No horizontal gridlines: the row bands do that job.
- Row bands: every other category row gets a #ECEDD3 rectangle with 3px radius spanning x 40 to 920.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped horizontal bars, one group per category row, one bar per series in legend order, 11px tall with 2px gaps, rounded 3px on the value end only and square at the axis. Value labels 5px past the bar end.
- Line chart: one 2.5px line per series in the same four colors with round joins, each point a 4px dot filled with the series color and a 1.5px #F7F3E3 ring; label each line at its right end with its insect glyph and name in bark brown. Keep the alternating bands, turned into vertical bands behind every other x period.

Labels and annotation:
- Insect glyphs appear in the legend only, never on the bars. They are fine-line drawings (1px bark-brown stroke, no fill, round caps): a round striped bumblebee, a slimmer striped honeybee, a narrow banded hoverfly with long swept wings, a four-lobed butterfly with antennae.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, 3D, insect icons scattered over the data, a legend box, heavy borders, and cartoonish or emoji-like glyphs.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the yellow bars stay readable against the cream (their value labels must be present), the legend items are evenly spaced, every row total equals the sum of its bars, and the title's claim is true for the data.
