Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Poll Average" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a polling tracker from a serious data desk. A clean white page where every individual poll is a faint dot and the smoothed averages cut through them as thick, confident lines, each wrapped in a soft margin-of-error band.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Series 1: #0F766E (deep teal). Series 2: #EA580C (warm orange). Further series, if any: #6D28D9, then #475569.
- Primary ink: #1C1917. Secondary text: #78716C. Gridlines and footer rule: #E7E5E4.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Fraunces (optical size axis, 600) for the title: 34px, -0.4px letter-spacing, sentence case, stating the finding. Fraunces 700 at 26px for the end-of-line values.
- Commissioner for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing in #78716C; subtitle 15px #78716C (measure, unit, margin of error, current lead); legend 13px 600; axis labels 12px #78716C; annotation heads 12px 700; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 54, title at 100, subtitle at 130, a one-line legend at 160, plot from y 186 to 506 and from x 72 to 790. The right 110px holds the end labels. A 1px #E7E5E4 footer rule at y 548 with the source line below.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #E7E5E4, at round values (every 5 points), labelled at the left with a % sign.
- A 1px ink baseline with 5px month ticks and month names 22px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: individual observations as r 3.4 dots in the series color at 22% opacity, drawn behind everything. For each series a margin-of-error band (value plus and minus the MOE) filled with the series color at 12% opacity, then the smoothed average as a 4px monotone-cubic line with round caps, sitting on an 8px white casing so crossing lines stay separate. A r 6 end dot with a 2.5px white ring.
- Bar chart: slender bars in the series colors at 85% opacity with the raw observations still shown as faint dots, and a 4px horizontal tick in the full series color marking the average on each bar; the error range as a 12% tint box behind each bar.

Labels and annotation:
- Direct end labels to the right of the last point: the value in Fraunces 700 26px in the series color with the series short name in Commissioner 13px 600 under it. Nudge them apart if they would touch.
- Key event as a vertical 1.2px ink rule dashed 4 on 4 across the full plot height, with a two-line label (bold name, date in #78716C) right-aligned just left of the rule at the top.
- Mark the crossover with an r 9 open ink circle (1.2px) and an elbow leader to a two-line note placed just right of the event rule, e.g. "Lead changes hands / Harbor ahead from Jul 13".
- Legend: a faint dot plus a 24px thick line swatch for each series, then a gray dot labelled "Individual poll".

Avoid: heavy dots that compete with the average, jagged unsmoothed averages, gradient fills, a boxed plot area, and more than two accent colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dots stay faint behind the bands, the white casing keeps the lines readable where they cross, the end labels do not overlap each other, and the lead in the subtitle equals the difference of the two end values.
