Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Pleading Paper" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an exhibit filed with a court. The chart sits on legal pleading paper, with numbered lines down the left margin, a case caption, and plain black ink. Sober, exact and a little formal.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FFFFFF for the whole canvas. No tint, no texture.
- Ink: #111111 for text, the data line, markers and the baseline. Margin rules #1A1A1A.
- Reference line: #8C8C8C. Gridlines: #E4E4E4. Secondary text #444444, line numbers #555555, footnotes #333333.

Typography (Google Fonts): Tinos for everything, in 400, 700 and 400 italic.
- Court header: 14px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing, centered; a second line below in 13px 400 uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing.
- Caption block: 13px 400 uppercase on the left, 13px on the right (case number; "EXHIBIT 4" in 700 with 1px letter-spacing; a short italic description).
- Title: 23px 700, sentence case, stating the finding. Subtitle: 14px #444444 with measure, unit, place and period.
- Axis labels 12px #444444. Annotations 12.5px italic with a 9px superscript footnote number. Footnotes 11.5px with an 8.5px superscript number. Source 11.5px italic.

Layout:
- A 28-line grid: row n has its baseline at y = 29 + (n - 1) x 20.5. Line numbers 1 to 28, 12px, right-aligned at x = 58, one per row, top to bottom of the page.
- Two 1px vertical rules at x = 70 and x = 74 running the full height, and one 1px rule at x = 906 on the right.
- Text starts at x = 96. Seat every text line on a row of the grid: court header rows 1 and 2; caption rows 4 to 7; title row 9; subtitle row 10; plot rows 12 to 25; x-axis labels row 26; footnotes rows 27 and 28; source right-aligned at x = 884 on row 28.
- Case caption: three uppercase lines on the left, a column of ")" characters at x = 470 on rows 4 to 7, and a 0.8px rule under the left column closing into the last ")". To the right of the parentheses (x = 500): case number, the exhibit number in bold, an italic description.
- A 150px 0.7px rule above the footnotes, as in a legal brief.

Axes and grid:
- Plot from x = 150 to 860. Four horizontal gridlines at round values, 0.8px #E4E4E4; the lowest is the baseline in 1px #111111.
- Y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot with thousands separators. X labels only at every fifth period and the last one, with 5px ink tick marks below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2px #111111 line with straight segments and miter joins, and a 6 x 6 px filled black square at every data point. Bold 13px value labels at the first and last points.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars in solid #111111, about 45% of the band width, with a bold 13px value label above the first, last and any annotated bar.
- Reference line: a horizontal 1.5px #8C8C8C line dashed 6 on, 4 off (for example a prior-period average), with an italic 12px #6A6A6A label right-aligned just below it at the plot's right edge.

Labels and annotation:
- Annotate events with a 0.7px black vertical leader from the marker to a short italic label, followed by a superscript footnote number (1, 2 ...). The footnotes at the bottom explain each event in a full sentence.
- Titles and footnotes must be arithmetically true for the data.

Avoid: color, rounded corners, shadows, gradients, a legend box, sans-serif type, and any text floating between the grid rows of the page.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every text baseline sits on a numbered row, the line numbers run 1 to 28 without gaps, the caption parentheses align in one column, and each footnote number in the chart has a matching footnote.
