Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Playbill" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a classic theater program. A black and gold masthead, a cream page, engraved capitals and bookish italic, and a cast-list legend with dotted leaders. Formal, quiet and a little ceremonial.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F6F0E1 (cream).
- Masthead band and the main series: #111111 (program black).
- Gold: #B8963E for masthead rules and text, the capacity or target line, and the secondary series; #8A6D2A (deep gold) for small labels on the cream page (period labels, reference-line labels, the legend header).
- Alternating period bands: #ECE2CA. Gridlines #D6CAAE. Secondary text #6B6152. Masthead subtitle #D8CDB4.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cinzel for all capitals: masthead eyebrow 12px 600 with 4px letter-spacing in gold; show name 30px 700 with 1.5px letter-spacing in cream; right-hand masthead label 11px 600, 3px letter-spacing, gold; headline 23px 600 in black stating the finding; period labels ("WEEK I") 10.5px 600, 2px letter-spacing, deep gold; legend roles 12.5px 600 with 1.5px letter-spacing; legend header 10px 600 with 3px letter-spacing.
- EB Garamond for text: subtitle 17px italic #6B6152; axis and period date labels 14px; legend descriptions 15px italic; masthead tagline 19px italic; source 13px italic, centered.

Layout:
- A full-bleed #111111 masthead band 100px tall, with a 0.8px gold hairline at y 22 across the margins, and under the band a 2px gold rule then a 0.8px gold rule 3px lower (a double rule). Eyebrow top left, show name below it; a small caps label top right and an italic tagline under it.
- 56px side margins. Headline at y 150, italic subtitle at y 176.
- Plot from x 100 to 900, y 212 to 440, with period labels centered 2px above the plot inside the bands and date ranges centered 22px below the baseline.
- Legend at the bottom set like a cast list: a centered "IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE" header, then one row per series: Cinzel role name at left, a dotted leader (1.2px, round caps, 0.5 on 5 off, #6B6152), a small swatch of the mark, and an italic EB Garamond description.
- Source centered at the foot between two short 0.8px gold rules.

Axes and grid:
- Alternate periods (weeks) are shaded with #ECE2CA bands that run 16px above the plot top down to the baseline; the other periods stay cream.
- Three 0.8px #D6CAAE horizontal gridlines with EB Garamond labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A capacity or target line as a 1px #B8963E dashed (4 on, 3 off) rule with its value in deep gold.
- A 1px #111111 baseline. No vertical axis line.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 1.8px #111111 line with straight segments and round markers at every point (r 3.6, cream fill, 1.5px black stroke; a sold-out point is a solid black r 4.6 marker). A period average is a 2.5px #B8963E horizontal rule across each band, inset 8px from its edges.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered #111111 bars starting at zero, grouped inside the alternating period bands, with a 2.5px gold rule across each band at the period average. Value labels, if any, in EB Garamond 13px.

Avoid: sans-serif type, bright colors, gradients, shadows, a box legend with swatch squares (use the cast-list rows), and heavy gridlines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dotted leaders line up across legend rows, the masthead double rule reads cleanly, period labels do not touch the capacity line, and the headline numbers match the computed averages.
