Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Plankton Tows" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a marine biology survey figure presented on a dark screen. Deep green-blue water, four bright but friendly group colors, rounded humanist type and clear grouping of sites. Lively, never neon.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0D1C1D (dark green-blue). Segment separators use the page color.
- Groups, in stack order from the baseline up: #4FD1C5 (aqua), #B5E550 (lime), #F2836B (coral), #B7A3F0 (lavender).
- Primary text and totals: #E4F0EE. Secondary text, tick labels, baseline and divider: #86A3A1. Gridlines and group brackets: #1E3334.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Nunito Sans throughout. Title 25px 800 #E4F0EE stating the finding with a computed ratio; subtitle 14px 400 #86A3A1 with measure, unit, method, place and date.
- Legend 13px 600; stack totals 13px 800; category labels 12px 600 #86A3A1; group labels 12px 800 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing and a 12px 400 caption; the side note 12px italic in the color of the group it describes; source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px left margin. Title at y 56, subtitle at y 84, a one-row legend at y 112 (12px rounded squares, 2px radius, label 7px right, about 28px between items).
- Plot from x 112 to 900, y 170 to 486, with a 36px extra gap between the two site groups and a dotted 1px #86A3A1 divider (2 on, 3 off) in the gap, running from above the plot down through the group labels.
- Under the category labels, a 2px #1E3334 bracket line spans each group, with the uppercase group name and a caption (the group mean) below it.
- Optional right-aligned italic note at y 150 for a secondary finding.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #1E3334, at round values with comma-formatted labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A 1px #86A3A1 baseline. No y-axis line.

Marks:
- Bar chart: stacked bars 44px wide, square corners except a 3px radius on the top of the top segment; a 1.5px page-colored line between segments; the stack total centered 9px above in 13px 800. Stack order is the same in every bar.
- Line chart: one 2.5px line per group in its color with 4.5px dots ringed in the page color, direct labels at the right end instead of relying on the legend; keep the group divider and brackets under the x-axis.

Avoid: gradients, glows, 3D, outlines around bars, more than four colors, and summing rates across sites (use means for group captions).

When you're done, render the chart and check that each total equals its segments, the group captions and title ratio are computed from the data, the legend spacing is even, and the divider sits centered in the gap.
