Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Photo Essay" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a data page inside a dark photo essay spread. Cinematic and quiet: a near-black canvas, a blurred teal photograph glowing in one corner, one luminous white line and numbered moments captioned like photographs.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Canvas: #0B0E10 (near black).
- Photographic wash: #1F5C63 (dark teal) radial gradient anchored in the upper-right corner, fading through #123A40 to transparent, plus soft ellipses of #2E7C82 (75% opacity), #3D8E90 (25%) and #0E2E33, all blurred together with a 46px Gaussian blur.
- Line, markers and headings: #F4F7F6 (cool white).
- Kicker: #7FC4C4. Caption body and subtitle: #A9B6B5. Axis labels and source: #5D6B6C. Gridlines and caption rule: #1E2628.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bricolage Grotesque throughout. Kicker 600 12px uppercase, 2.6px letter-spacing. Title 700 34px, -0.8px letter-spacing, stating the finding. Subtitle 300 16px with measure and unit.
- Caption headings 600 14px white; caption body 300 13.5px #A9B6B5, lines 18px apart. Marker numbers 700 12px. Axis labels 300 12px.

Layout:
- 48px left margin. Kicker at y 66, title at y 116, subtitle at y 146.
- Left caption column from x 48 to x 320: a 1px rule at y 200, then numbered captions about 76px apart, each with an outlined number circle (r 11, 1.3px white stroke), a short heading (date or period) and two lines of body text.
- Plot on the right from x 380 to x 900, y 200 to 500, with value labels just right of the plot.
- Source bottom left at y 572.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #1E2628, at round values; value labels at the right end in 12px #5D6B6C, the zero labelled with its unit ("0 km"), negatives with a true minus sign.
- Five or six year labels under the plot. No axis lines or ticks.

Marks:
- Line chart: one smooth (monotone cubic) 2.5px #F4F7F6 line with round caps and a soft glow (5px Gaussian blur merged under the stroke, filter region covering the whole canvas so it is never clipped). A faint area under it: a white gradient from 10% to 0% opacity. Four numbered markers on the line: solid white circles r 11 with a 3px canvas-colored ring and the number in 700 12px #0B0E10, each keyed to a caption in the left column.
- Bar chart: slim square bars in #F4F7F6 at 85% opacity with the same glow, the notable bars carrying solid white numbered circles above them keyed to the left captions. Same blurred teal corner, horizontal gridlines only.

Labels and annotation:
- Captions read like photo captions: a date or period, then one or two plain sentences with a number ("The fastest early retreat: 0.72 km lost in 25 years."). Numbers in captions must match the data.

Effects:
- Keep the teal wash confined to the upper right so the title stays on near-black; it should read as an out-of-focus photograph, never as a flat color block.

Avoid: multiple series colors, legends, vertical gridlines, hard-edged background shapes, bright saturated color, and more than four numbered moments.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the glow is not clipped, every numbered marker matches its caption and the caption numbers are arithmetically right, and the title stays legible over the dark background.
