Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Phase Ranges" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the site-sequence figure of a handsome archaeology monograph, set on dark fired clay. Warm, calm and literary: elegant serif phase names, floating sand-colored ranges whose ends dissolve into uncertainty, and one ember line for the event that matters.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #2E1B14 (dark terracotta brown).
- Range bars: #D8B98A (sand), full opacity in the confident core and fading to 0 over the uncertain ends.
- Event line, its dot, its label and the eyebrow: #E07A4F (ember).
- Primary text (title, category names): #F1E4CC (cream). Secondary text and axis line: #A89078.
- Gridlines: #4A3228.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond 700 for the title (38px, cream, stating the finding, with font-variant-numeric: lining-nums) and 600 for category names (23px, cream).
- Karla for everything else: eyebrow 12px 700 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in ember; subtitle 15px #A89078 with measure, unit and what the fade means; the range and uncertainty under each name 12.5px ("430–150 BCE, ±30 yrs"); axis labels 12.5px 500; code boxes 10.5px 700 with 0.5px letter-spacing in sand; event label 12.5px 700 ember; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow, title and subtitle stacked at the top left.
- A label column from x 56 to about 280 holds each category's serif name with its numeric range beneath it; the plot runs from x 290 to 900 with one 58px row per category, in chronological (or logical) order top to bottom.
- The event line rises 30px above the first row with a 3px dot at its top and its label to the right of the dot. Source line at the bottom.

Axes and grid:
- Vertical gridlines at round intervals (0.8px #4A3228), the era boundary or zero line at 1.2px. A 1px #A89078 baseline under the last row with labels 22px below it, era-suffixed ("600 BCE", "200 CE", "BCE | CE" at the boundary). No y axis.

Marks:
- Bar chart (ranges): 20px tall square-cornered bars from low minus uncertainty to high plus uncertainty, filled with a horizontal gradient that is transparent at the outer ends, reaches full sand opacity at low plus uncertainty and stays full until high minus uncertainty. 1px sand hairline ticks extend 4px above and below the bar at the central low and high estimates. A 24 x 15 px inset box in the background color sits 6px inside the start of the confident part, holding the category code in sand. For ordinary bars from zero, keep the faded tip only at the value end as an error band.
- Line chart: a 2px sand line with a soft uncertainty band (sand at 25% opacity, fading to 0 at its edges), small sand dots with background-colored rings at each observation, the event marked with the same ember vertical line, and series names set in the serif at the line ends.

Avoid: bright or multiple data colors, rounded bars, drop shadows, glows, heavy gridlines, and a legend (names sit in the label column).

When you're done, render the chart and check that each fade runs over exactly the stated uncertainty, the central-estimate ticks line up with the numbers under each name, the title's claim is computed from the data (there is no year 0 when spanning BCE to CE), and the ember event line is the only warm accent.
