Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Period Rooms" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the timeline hall of a history museum. Dark walnut walls, gilt millennium rules, bars in aged metals and pigments, inscriptional capitals and small italic artifact captions.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Wall: #1D1A17 for the canvas, with a 1px #2B2621 panel line inset 24px.
- One hue per top-level group: #B8894A (aged bronze), #5FA08C (verdigris), #B0473E (oxblood), #E6DCC8 (bone).
- Gilt rules and their labels: #A88A4E (rules at 0.8px, 0.75 opacity). Main text #E6DCC8; secondary text #A0968A; captions #CFC4B1; closing rule #3A342D.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cinzel 600 for the title (24px, stating the finding), the rule labels (11px, 1.5px letter-spacing) and the group key (12px, uppercase, 1.4px letter-spacing).
- Alegreya Sans for everything else: subtitle 15px; row names 500 at 15.5px; dates 12px; duration values 700 at 15px in the row's group color with "years" 11px beneath; artifact captions italic 12px with a 4px wall-colored halo (paint-order stroke) so rules never cut them.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Title and subtitle at the top. A label column on the left (name over dates, duration right-aligned at x 254), the time axis from x 270 to 900, rows 44px tall from y 150.
- A group key along the bottom (22 x 10 swatches, Cinzel capitals), a diamond key "key artifact on display" in italic, and the source at the right.

Axes and grid:
- No zero baseline and no horizontal gridlines. Thin vertical gilt rules at round milestones (each millennium) from just above the first row to the closing rule, each topped by a small gilt diamond and a Cinzel label ("2000 BCE", "BCE | CE").

Marks:
- Bar chart: floating range bars 12px tall, 1.5px corner radius, from start to end value, in the group color, with a 1.5px white highlight at 0.18 opacity along the top edge. Key moments as 14px diamonds (wall fill, 1.3px bone stroke) on the bar, captioned in italic 12px 13px above the bar.
- Line chart: 2.5px lines in the group colors over the same gilt milestone rules, with diamond markers at key points and italic captions above them, and the series named in Alegreya Sans 500 at the line ends.

Avoid: saturated primaries, gradients on bars, zero-based axes for date ranges, gridlines that compete with the gilt rules, and captions that overlap bars in other rows.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every bar starts and ends on its true dates, the durations and the title's claim are arithmetically right, captions stay inside their row and are not cut by rules, and bone-colored bars remain distinct from the text.
