Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Patent Drawing" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a formal drawing sheet from a patent filing. Pure white paper, black ink linework only, bars shaded by engraved hatching instead of color, every element tagged with a reference numeral on a thin curved leader. Austere, exact and a little old-fashioned.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FFFFFF for the whole canvas and for knockouts behind labels.
- Ink: #000000 for outlines, axes, ticks, leaders, numerals and all text.
- Hatch ink: #222222 for the fine hatching lines inside bars (a touch lighter so dense crosshatch does not clog).
- No other colors, no grays, no tints and no transparency.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text throughout. Sheet number "3/7" 16px regular, centered at the very top. Title 700 25px centered, stating the finding. Subtitle italic 15px centered, stating measure, unit and condition.
- Tick labels 14px regular. Axis unit label italic 14px, rotated -90 degrees. Value labels 700 16px. Category labels 12.5px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing.
- Reference numerals 19px regular. The figure label "FIG. 3" 700 30px with 3px letter-spacing, centered below the drawing. Source line italic 12px.

Layout:
- Sheet number centered at y 40, title at y 90, subtitle at y 116, all centered.
- The drawing centered below, about 590 px wide and 285 px tall, with the figure label about 80px under the baseline and the source line at bottom left.
- Generous white margins all around; nothing touches the edge.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines. A 1.4px left axis and a heavier 2px baseline, square ends.
- Outward ticks 7px long, 1.2px, with comma-grouped labels (1,500) right-aligned 13px left of the axis.

Marks:
- Bar chart: wide bars (88 px at 4 bars), square corners, 1.6px #000000 outline. Fill each bar with a different engraved hatch so bars are told apart by texture: diagonal lines at 45 degrees every 8px; a dense crosshatch at 5.5px spacing (reserve it for the highlighted bar); sparse diagonal lines at -45 degrees every 13px; horizontal lines every 5px. Hatch strokes 0.9 to 1px in #222222. Value label centered 11px above each bar on a #FFFFFF knockout.
- Line chart: a 1.6px #000000 line with straight segments. Mark each point with a small open circle (r 4, #FFFFFF fill, 1.2px stroke). Several series are told apart by dash pattern (solid, 8 4, 2 3) and by the reference numeral at their end, never by color. Shade the area under the primary series with the 45 degree hatch.
- Every element that matters (each bar or series, and the baseline) gets a reference numeral (10, 12, 14, 16, 20...) placed in the space beside it, joined by a 1px quadratic-curve leader that ends just inside the element's edge.

Avoid: any color or gray fill, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, gridlines, boxed legends, bold outlines heavier than 2px, and sans-serif type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that it contains only black on white, each bar's hatch is distinct from its neighbors, every leader lands on its element without crossing another, the numerals sit in clear space, and "FIG. 3" and "3/7" are centered.
