Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Overprint Bars" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1990s magazine printed in fluorescent spot inks on black stock. Two inks overlap and multiply into a third color, a huge condensed numeral is the headline, and printer's registration marks sit in the corners.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0A0A0A (black stock).
- Series: #FF6A13 (fluorescent orange) and #00D8FF (cyan). Where they overlap, multiply produces #005913 (deep overprint green). It is not a data series: keep it out of the legend and explain it in one clause of the source note.
- Title and axis baseline: #F5F5F0. Secondary text and axis numbers: #8C8C86.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bebas Neue for the title: the key number at 156px (e.g. the latest total) and a 40px headline line beside it.
- Karla for everything else: deck 16px #8C8C86 in two lines; legend 12px 700 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; axis numbers 13px; category labels 15px 700 with 1px letter-spacing; value labels 14px 700 in the series color; source 12px.

Layout:
- Huge numeral from x 56 at baseline y 176; headline line and deck to its right from x 446 (y 96, 126, 148) and the legend at y 164.
- Plot x 96 to 884, baseline y 468, top of scale y 214.
- Category labels set horizontally, centered 26px under each group; the latest one in #F5F5F0, the rest gray.
- A registration crosshair in each corner, centered 28px in from both edges: a 0.8px #F5F5F0 circle of radius 7 with 26px cross lines.

Axes and grid:
- Three gridlines, 0.8px #F5F5F0 at 16% opacity; a 1px #F5F5F0 baseline; axis numbers on the left in gray.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped square-cornered bars 42px wide, the second bar overlapping the first by 8px, just enough for a narrow overprint strip while both bars stay clearly visible. Draw all bars inside an isolated group (isolation: isolate) and give the cyan bars mix-blend-mode multiply, so the overlap turns deep green and the rest keeps its pure ink. Label only the latest group's values, orange right-aligned 10px left of center and cyan left-aligned 10px right of center.
- Line chart: two 5px lines in orange and cyan, the cyan one multiplied over the orange inside an isolated group so crossings print deep green, with 8px square markers and the same horizontal category labels.

Avoid: a legend entry for the overprint color, stacking label characters vertically, multiplying against the black page (without isolation the bars disappear), rounded corners, gradients, glows, and more than two inks plus their overprint.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the overlap strips are deep green rather than black, the bars still show their full heights, the category labels read horizontally, and the crosshairs sit clear of all content.
