Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Open Water" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a sea swimmer's season log. Deep, quiet water, an elegant serif headline, one luminous line over a soft historical band, and sandy markers for the days that mattered.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0A2233 (deep sea) for the whole canvas.
- Main line: #7FD1C6 (pale teal). Historical range band: #3E86B8 at 28% opacity, labeled in #9CC6E4.
- Threshold line and event markers: #F2C879 (sand).
- Primary text #E8F1F4; secondary text #8FA8B6; gridlines and rules #1B3A4E.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Newsreader 500 34px for the title (sentence case, stating the finding).
- Karla for everything else: eyebrow 700 12.5px uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in teal; subtitle 400 15.5px; axis labels 400 13px; month labels 700 12.5px; annotation labels 700 12.5 to 13px; event names 700 12.5px in primary text with 11.5px secondary detail below; source 12px.

Layout:
- 48px side margins. Eyebrow y 56, title y 98, subtitle y 126. Plot from x 84 to 900, y 176 to 470. Event labels under the baseline at +24 and +40. Footer rule at y 548 and source at y 572.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #1B3A4E gridlines every 2 units, labeled with a degree sign, right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- Month starts as 1px dashed (2 on 4 off) vertical lines, month names 6px right of each line at the top of the plot.
- A 1px #8FA8B6 baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a single 2.4px teal line through daily values (monotone smoothing), over the historical min to max band. Mark the peak with a 4.5px teal dot with a 2px page-colored ring and a "Peak" label above. A 1.4px sand dashed line (7 on 5 off) marks the threshold, labeled right-aligned just below it.
- Bar chart: slim 1px-gapped teal columns with the band drawn as a translucent #3E86B8 range behind each column, the threshold as the same sand dashed line, and bars below it at 45% opacity.
- Events: 5px sand dots with a 2px page ring sitting on the baseline, a faint 1px leader (primary text at 25%) up to the line, name and the day's value below.

Avoid: bright saturated blues, glows, gradients on the line, more than one data line, heavy borders.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the band sits behind the line, the threshold count in the title matches the data, and event labels don't overlap each other.
