Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Op Art" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1960s optical art gallery poster. Strict black and white, a vibrating field of stripes that ripples with the data, a stark white title block and a checkerboard timeline, while the data line itself stays crisp and easy to read.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #0A0A0A for the canvas; also the casing around lines and markers.
- White: #FFFFFF for the main line, markers, title block, checker cells and primary labels; the stripe field is white at 12% opacity.
- Cool gray: #8B8B8B for the comparison series, tick labels and secondary text.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Syncopate 700 uppercase for the title: 21px, #0A0A0A on the white block, 1px letter-spacing, short and stating the finding.
- Space Grotesk for everything else: subtitle 13px uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing (first line 500 white, second 400 gray); tick labels 12px gray; series names 12px 700 uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing; end values 17px 500; peak label 12.5px 700 white on a black box; month labels 13px 500 with 3px letter-spacing; footer 11px with 2px letter-spacing in gray.

Layout:
- A white rectangle 560 x 62 px at the top left (x 40, y 34) holds the title; the two-line subtitle sits to its right.
- Plot about x 96 to 792, y 150 to 456, with direct end labels in the right margin.
- The checker strip sits 18px below the plot, then month labels; footer source line at the bottom left, period note at the bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines at all. Y tick labels on the left, each with an 8 x 2 px white tick. No axis lines; the checker strip is the x-axis.
- Checker strip: one cell per period, two 8px rows in opposite phase (black and white), outlined by a 1px white box; 2 x 10 px white month dividers below it and month names centered under each month.

Effects:
- Stripe field behind the plot, clipped to the plot area: about 96 stripes (3.2px white at 12% opacity) that are vertical offsets of a gently smoothed copy of the main series (Gaussian moving average, sigma about 22px), so they bend with the data. Their spacing tightens from 13px in the troughs to 7px at the peaks, producing a moire compression around highs.

Marks:
- Line chart: the main series is a 3px white line with miter joins over a 7px #0A0A0A casing, with 7px white square markers outlined 1.5px in black; the peak marker is 12px and gets a label ("PEAK 9,840, WK 14") in a black box just above it. The comparison series is a 2px gray dashed line (8 on 5 off) over a 6px black casing, no markers. Label both lines at their ends: the name, then the value.
- Bar chart: white bars with square corners and a 2px black gap between bars, the comparison as gray bars beside them; the stripe field bends around the bar tops instead of a line, compressing over the tallest bars; values in white Space Grotesk above each bar.

Avoid: any hue, gradients, rounded corners, y gridlines, glows, and letting the stripe field run under the title or tick labels.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the main line reads clearly over the stripes at thumbnail size, the stripes visibly compress at the peaks, the checker cells align with the data points, and no labels sit on top of the stripe field without a casing.
