Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Odometer" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a vintage dashboard instrument panel in cream enamel and chrome. Every value reads out on black drum counters with white numerals, the kind a trip meter uses, and one wheel is always caught mid-roll.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Panel: #EFE9DC for the whole canvas.
- Bars: #5C7C9A (steel blue), with the right 18% of each bar shading to #4B6882 and a 1.5px white top edge at 35% opacity.
- Drum wheels: #161616 with white #FFFFFF numerals; the window behind the wheels #0B0B0B.
- Chrome bezels and the panel frame: a vertical gradient #E4E7EA, #B9BEC4 at 45%, #8E949B, with a 0.6px #8E949B outline.
- Tenths wheel: #B8322A (red) with white numerals.
- Ink: #2B2822 for the title, baseline and ticks; #6B6457 for subtitle, axis labels and notes. Engraved gridlines: 1px #D3CAB6 with a 1px white line at 70% opacity directly beneath.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Oswald 600 for the title, 30px, #2B2822, stating the finding.
- Roboto Mono for everything else: subtitle 13px 400; drum numerals 12.5px 500 (19px on the large total counter); axis labels 11px; category labels 12px 500 uppercase with 1px letter-spacing (the latest category in #2B2822, the rest #6B6457); counter caption 10px 500 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; source 11px.

Layout:
- A 4px chrome frame inset 14px from the canvas edge with 14px corner radius, a 1px white inner line 5px inside it, and a chrome screw (7px radius, slotted at a random angle) 36px in from each corner.
- Title at x 60, y 82; subtitle 28px below.
- Top right: a "TOTAL" trip counter (caption above it), 7 wheels of 17.5 x 28px on a 19px pitch, the last wheel red for tenths.
- Plot area about x 104 to 904, y 168 to 512.

Axes and grid:
- Engraved horizontal gridlines at round intervals, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot ("10k").
- A 1.5px #2B2822 baseline with fine engraved ticks below it: five per category, 4.5px long 0.7px wide, every fifth 9px long 1.1px wide, each paired with a 0.6px white highlight 0.9px to its right.

Marks:
- Bar chart: 40px wide square-cornered bars. On top of each bar, 8px above it, a drum counter showing the exact value: one wheel per digit (10 x 18px on a 10.8px pitch) in a 1.2px-radius black window with a 2.5px-radius chrome bezel, each wheel shaded by a vertical gradient (black 55% at top and bottom, white 10% at the middle) and a 7% white glint across the upper third of the window. The last wheel is clipped and rolled toward the next digit by the fraction the display truncates (for 48,261.6 the 1 is 60% of the way to 2, both partly visible). The latest bar gets an extra red tenths wheel. Add a small legend note "Red wheel: tenths" with a 14px red square.
- Line chart: a 2.5px #5C7C9A line with straight segments over a 12% steel-blue area fill, square 7px markers in #5C7C9A with a 1.5px #EFE9DC ring, and the same drum counter floating 12px above each point (or every other point if they would collide), the latest with a red tenths wheel.

Avoid: rounded bars, bright colors other than the single red tenths wheel, glossy 3D, drop shadows on bars, and plain text value labels (values live on drums).

When you're done, render the chart and check that every drum counter reads the right value, neighboring counters don't touch, the rolling wheel shows two partial digits, and only the latest value and the total carry a red wheel.
