Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Ocean Liner" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1930s shipping line's poster for a night sailing. Elegant and nautical: deep navy, a cream line studded with chrome-ringed portholes, triple chrome hull bands top and bottom, and a small streamlined funnel with a red band.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0E1A33 (deep navy). Porthole glass: radial gradient from #2C4C80 (center-left highlight) to #08112A.
- Data line, title and key values: #F1E6CC (deck cream).
- Chrome #B9C0C9, used as a horizontal gradient (#6F7886, #B9C0C9 at 30%, #EEF1F5 at 50%, #B9C0C9 at 70%, #6F7886) for the hull bands and porthole rings.
- Funnel red #C23B2E for the funnel band and the ring around the single highlighted point.
- Gridlines #22335A. Secondary text #8C97AD.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Marcellus SC 400 for the title: 38px deck cream, stating the finding.
- Tenor Sans 400 for everything else: eyebrow 12px uppercase with 3.2px letter-spacing in chrome; subtitle 16px #8C97AD; axis labels 14px; value labels 16px chrome (20px cream for the highlight); year labels 14px with 1.6px letter-spacing; note 13px; source 12px; folio 11px uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- Hull bands: three full-width chrome stripes at the top (y 22, 29, 34; 2.2px, 1.4px and 0.9px tall) and the same trio at the bottom starting at y 546.
- Eyebrow at y 58, title baseline y 106, subtitle y 138, all at x 56.
- Funnel silhouette top right (about 50 x 78 at x 846, y 52): a cream trapezoid raked slightly backward, a black cap 7px tall, a red band 22px tall starting 12px below the top, standing on a 78 x 4 chrome deck strip with rounded ends.
- Plot from x 110 to 880, y 200 to 470. Source left and folio right at y 584, below the bottom hull bands.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. 1px #22335A horizontal gridlines extending 30px past the plot on both sides, labels right-aligned 44px left of the plot. Year labels at y 512.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 3px deck cream line with straight segments and round joins. Each point is a porthole: r 12 circle filled with the glass gradient, a 3.5px chrome gradient ring, and a short 1.6px cream highlight arc in the upper left (85% opacity). The highlighted point gets an extra r 18 1.6px funnel-red ring. Value labels 24px above each porthole (below it when the point drops sharply), with a short note for any anomaly.
- Bar chart: slender cream bars (about 40% of the band) with fully rounded tops, each topped by a porthole (same glass, ring and highlight) centered on the bar end; the highlighted bar's porthole gets the red ring. Same hull bands, funnel and grid.

Avoid: bright blues, glows, more than one red mark, heavy gridlines, square markers, and stripes that cut through the chart area.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the chrome rings read as metal (light center, dark ends), portholes do not collide with value labels, the funnel stays clear of the title, and only one point carries the red ring.
