Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Night Lights" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a data story laid over a satellite composite of the Earth at night. Near-black ground, a barely visible coastline, clusters of warm sodium-orange settlement lights, and the data drawn as glowing lines of light in the same warm family. Scientific, atmospheric and restrained.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground (sea and canvas): #05070B. Land silhouette: #0C1119 with a 1.2px #223043 coastline.
- Series, in order of importance: #FF9A3C (sodium orange, the hero series), #F6E27A (pale yellow), #B8703F (dim copper). These share a warm hue and differ mainly in lightness, so every series must be labeled directly at its end.
- Title: #F1F2F4. Labels and values: #D5D9E0. Secondary text and axis labels: #7D8594. Gridlines: #1A2130, baseline #2A3344.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Space Grotesk throughout: title 600 29px with -0.5px letter-spacing, stating the finding; subtitle 400 16px #7D8594 with measure, unit and period; axis labels 13px #7D8594; end labels 600 15px in the series color with the latest value in 400 13px #D5D9E0 below; annotations 13px #D5D9E0; source 12px; a product-style caption at the bottom right in 500 11px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing, segments separated by " | " (for example "DAY/NIGHT BAND | ANNUAL COMPOSITE | CLOUD-FREE MEDIAN").

Layout:
- Title at y 62, subtitle at y 92, left at x 56. Plot from x 92 to 800 and y 160 to 500, leaving the right 140px for end labels. X labels at y 526. Footer at y 576.

Texture:
- Background map behind everything: a land polygon whose coastline is a sum of sines at several frequencies (amplitudes about 30, 16, 9, 4 and 2.5px) so it looks like a real shore, crossing the canvas diagonally, plus one or two small irregular islands.
- Settlement lights only on land: for each of four or five cities, a radial glow of #FF9A3C (55% at the center, 18% at 35%, 0 at the edge, whole circle at 40% opacity, radius 35 to 90px) and a spray of 20 to 70 tiny dots (r 0.7 to 2.3, opacity 10% to 40%, brighter toward the center) with a 0.9px blur merged over the dots. Add about a hundred faint scattered town lights. Keep all clusters away from labels, end labels and the main lines.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. Horizontal gridlines at round values, 1px #1A2130 (baseline #2A3344), labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. X labels at a few evenly spaced periods plus the last one.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight segments with round joins and caps, hero 3px, others 2.4px, all at 90% opacity with a 5px Gaussian glow merged under the stroke (filter region covering the whole canvas so glows are never clipped). End dots r 4 in the series color over an r 8 glowing halo at 25% opacity. Draw the hero series last so it sits on top.
- Bar chart: slim bars (45% of the band) filled with a vertical gradient of the series color from 100% at the top to 35% at the base, 2px rounded tops, the same soft glow, and values above each bar in 600 13px. Grouped bars use the three series colors in order with a 3px gap; label each group's series directly or with small colored text keys, never a boxed legend.
- Annotation: a 0.8px #7D8594 dotted leader (2 3) from the event point up to a two-line 13px note, right-aligned against the leader.

Avoid: cool blues or greens in the data, pure white lines, a boxed legend, bright gridlines, glow that clips at the filter edge, and a background so busy it competes with the lines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the three warm series are still distinguishable (end labels present and not overlapping), no light cluster sits under a label, glows are unclipped, and the title's multiple is computed from the data.
