Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Neon Sign" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a real neon sign hung on a dark brick wall in a late-night noodle bar. The data is bent glass tubing, the title is neon script, and the wall glows where the light hits it.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Wall: #1A1413 base, mortar #0F0B0A, bricks 61 x 23px (64 x 26px pitch, 1.5px radius, running bond with every other row offset half a brick), each brick a random dark red-brown between #20100E and #321815.
- Neon red #FF4F6E with a #FFE3E8 core: the first series.
- Argon blue #4FB8FF with a #E3F4FF core: the second series.
- Amber #FFC857 with a #FFF3D1 core: the title and the annotation arrow.
- Warm white #FFF1D6 with a #FFFFFF core: the baseline tube.
- Painted wall text: cream #F2E6D8 (subtitle at 85% opacity, axis labels at 60%, source at 50%).
- Unlit glass: #3B3533 with a 1px #8A807B highlight at 60%. Clips: #2B2624 with a #6E6560 edge.
- Additional series, in order: #FF4F6E, #4FB8FF, #7CFF8A (green neon, #E6FFE9 core), #D98BFF (violet, #F6E6FF core).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Title: Neonderthaw 78px in amber, sentence case, short and punchy. Draw it twice: an amber copy with a glow (two merged Gaussian blurs, 6px and 2px, under the text), then a #FFF3D1 copy at 90% on top so the letters look white-hot.
- Everything else: Quicksand. Subtitle 17px 600, legend 17px 700 in the series color, annotation 16px 700 in amber, axis labels 14px 600, source 12px 600. Lettering in a tube color gets a 3px glow.

Texture and light:
- A grit layer over the wall: feTurbulence fractalNoise (baseFrequency 0.85, 2 octaves) turned into black speckles at about 55% opacity.
- Light spill: under each tube, the same path stroked 60px wide in its color, blurred 34px, blended with screen at 70% opacity, so the bricks behind it warm up. Add a soft amber ellipse of spill behind the title.
- A radial vignette darkening the edges to 72% black.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no axis lines. Y labels and 10px dashes painted on the wall in cream, right-aligned left of the plot, at three or four round values.
- A 3px warm-white baseline tube just below zero, running the width of the plot, held by clips, with one short dead section of unlit glass about 40px long (a burnt-out tube).
- X labels in cream below the baseline tube.

Marks:
- Line chart: each series is a lit tube, drawn as three strokes of the same smooth (monotone) path with round caps and joins: a halo 18px wide at 90% opacity blurred 7px, a 6px colored glass stroke, and a 2.4px core stroke on top. End each tube with a dark 4.5px electrode cap in unlit glass. Add mounting clips (6 x 18px, 2px radius) across the tube at three or four points.
- Bar chart: draw each bar as a neon outline, not a fill: a rounded-rectangle tube (6px radius) in the series color with the same halo, glass and core strokes, a faint 12% fill of the color inside, clips on the vertical sides, and the same spill on the wall behind it.
- Legend top right: a 34px tube swatch with a clip across its middle, then the label.
- Annotate the key point with a bent amber neon arrow (3.5px tube, curved shaft, two short head strokes) and a label.

Flicker: one letter of the title is unlit (drawn in #6B5A3A with no glow and no white core), as if the tube is flickering out.

Avoid: straight-line segments in the data (neon is bent smoothly), sharp corners, gradients inside the tubes, retro sunset or perspective-grid backgrounds, clean flat backgrounds, and more than four tube colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the halos aren't clipped at the canvas edges, the clips sit on the tubes, the dead tube section is short enough not to look like data, and the title stays legible despite the flickering letter.
