Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Mohs Scale" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a mineral gallery case in a natural history museum. Near-black velvet under a single soft spotlight, gem-colored marks that glow faintly, engraved-looking capitals and small brass label plates with catalog numbers. Hushed, precious and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Case ground: #141312 (near black), with soft top lighting: a radial gradient centered above the top edge (center 50%, -15%; radius 90%) from #3A332B at 90% opacity through #1E1C1A at 60% (55% stop) to transparent.
- Mark colors, chosen to match what each category is (the specimen's own color), not cycled: #8D6BB0 (amethyst), #2F8F6A (malachite), #D9A93C (citrine), #2E5FA8 (azurite), #D59AA0 (rose quartz). With no natural color mapping, assign them in that order.
- Brass: #B08D57 for label plate outlines, catalog numbers, scale numerals, callouts and the footer rule.
- Primary text: #E6DFD3. Secondary text: #8F877B. Faint ticks and leaders: #34302C. Plate fill: #1A1816.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Marcellus 28px #E6DFD3 for the title, stating the finding; Marcellus 12.5px uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing for category names on the plates; Marcellus 16px brass for the top scale numerals.
- Spectral 15.5px #8F877B for the subtitle; Spectral 11px brass with 0.4px letter-spacing for catalog numbers; Spectral 12.5px #E6DFD3 for values; Spectral italic 11.5px #8F877B for reference names on the scale and 12.5px brass for callouts; Spectral 12px for the footer.

Layout:
- 48px margins. Title baseline 62, subtitle 90.
- Left column of label plates: 228 x 22 rectangles at x 48, 1.5px radius, #1A1816 fill, 0.7px brass outline; the name left-aligned 10px in, the catalog number right-aligned 8px from the plate's right edge. A dotted 0.6px #34302C leader (1 on, 3 off) runs from the plate to 10px before the mark.
- Plot from x 300 to 906, rows 32px apart starting at y 176.
- Footer: a 0.6px brass rule at 60% opacity at y 566, "Source: ..." left and a short key ("Bar color follows specimen color") right at baseline 586.

Axes and grid:
- The value scale sits at the top: brass numerals with an italic reference name beneath each (for Mohs, the ten index minerals Talc to Diamond). Thin 0.8px #34302C vertical ticks drop from each numeral through all rows. No bottom axis, no horizontal gridlines, no axis lines.

Marks:
- Bar chart (range bars): 12px tall floating bars from low to high value with fully rounded ends (radius 6, the caps extending 6px past each value). Each bar has three layers: a 3px Gaussian-blur copy at 45% opacity as a soft glow, the solid color, and a vertical sheen gradient on top (white 38% at the top, white 6% at 45%, black 22% at the bottom). Range label ("4.5–7", en dash) 8px after the bar. A conventional bar chart uses the same treatment for bars growing from the scale's zero.
- Line chart: a 2.5px line in the first gem color with the same soft 3px blur glow at 45% opacity underneath, round joins, points as 5px gem dots with the sheen gradient, each series labeled at its end on a small brass hairline plate in place of a legend.

Labels and annotation:
- At most one italic brass callout, set after the most notable mark's value label ("the widest span, 2.5 steps").

Avoid: bright white, neon glows, heavy borders, a legend box, gridlines across the label plates, and sans-serif type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the glow is not clipped, every plate's name and catalog number fit without touching, the range caps start and end at the right values on the scale, and the callout claim is true for the data.
