Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Milestone Slip" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a project controller's planning sheet at the weekly board meeting. Warm off-white paper ruled into week squares, fine colored pen lines, and a tidy milestone register beside the chart.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FAF8F5. Alternate week columns shaded #F2EEE7. Fine grid #E7E1D8. Plot frame #D6CFC4.
- Series, in order: #1D4ED8 (sapphire), #047857 (emerald), #B45309 (amber), #B91C1C (crimson), #475569 (slate).
- Reference diagonal #A8A29E. Ink #1C1917, secondary text #78716C. Register panel #FFFFFF with a #E7E1D8 border.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Instrument Serif: title 36px regular #1C1917, sentence case, stating the finding; big slip numerals 24px in the series color; italic 13 to 14px for notes and the diagonal label.
- Instrument Sans for everything else: eyebrow 600 11px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in #78716C; subtitle 14px; axis numbers 11.5px; axis titles 500 12px; series labels 600 11.5px in the series color; register names 600 14px, register detail 12px, register headers 600 10.5px with 1.4px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 48px left margin. Eyebrow at y 44, title at y 84, subtitle at y 110.
- Plot on the left (about x 88 to 536, y 140 to 524), using the same pixels per unit on both axes (16px per week) so the reference diagonal is exactly 45 degrees.
- A white register panel on the right (x 578 to 928) with columns MILESTONE, PLAN, NOW, SLIP: a 1px ink rule under the header and 1px #E7E1D8 rules between rows. It doubles as the legend; each row starts with the series' marker.
- Source at the bottom left, 11px.

Axes and grid:
- A full week grid: 0.5px lines every unit, 1px every fourth unit, all #E7E1D8, over alternating #F2EEE7 week column shading.
- Numbers every 4 units in 11.5px #78716C; axis titles "Reporting week" and a rotated "Forecast completion week".
- A 1px dotted (3 on 3) ink "today" line with a small ink pill labeled TODAY (600 10px, 1.2px letter-spacing, page-colored text) at its top.

Marks:
- Line chart: each series as a 2.2px stepped line (horizontal then vertical, the value holds until the next reading), a 3px dot and short name label at its start. When a series reaches the diagonal (delivered), end it with an 8px diamond in the series color with a 2px page-colored outline; open series end in a hollow 4.5px circle with a "wk 26" label to the right.
- Bar chart: slender horizontal bars per item, the planned value as a hollow 1.5px outline bar and the latest value as a solid bar in the series color on top, a diamond at the end of finished items; keep the week grid and register panel.
- The diagonal is a 1.3px #A8A29E line labeled in italic serif along it ("delivered on the diagonal").

Avoid: smoothing the step lines, thick strokes, drop shadows, a separate legend box, and any label crossing a line.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the diagonal is exactly 45 degrees, every delivered series ends in a diamond on the diagonal, the register's PLAN, NOW and SLIP values match the data, and the title's slip is arithmetically true.
