Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Mid-Century" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1950s home-magazine infographic. Warm cream stock, a looping script headline, spaced geometric capitals, atomic starbursts and a boomerang or two as ornaments.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #F4E8D0 (warm cream). Text: #3B2A20 (espresso brown). Kicker and footer: #6E7A34 (olive).
- Series, in order: Teal #008C85, Burnt orange #D2601A, Mustard #D9A21B. A fourth, if needed, is olive #6E7A34.
- Boomerang ornaments: #E7C98E (pale ochre). Starbursts use the series colors.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Kicker above the title: Josefin Sans 700, 14px, uppercase, letter-spacing 4px, olive.
- Title: Yellowtail, 46px, brown, stating the finding.
- Subtitle: Josefin Sans 400, 17px. Axis labels: Josefin Sans 600, 14px, brown at 75% opacity. Direct series labels: Josefin Sans 700, 17px in the series color, with a 14px 400 brown note (the final value) beneath. Annotations: Yellowtail 26px. Footer: Josefin Sans 600, 12px, uppercase, letter-spacing 3px, olive.

Ornaments:
- Atomic starburst: 16 spokes from a center point, alternating full and 55% length, 2px round-capped strokes, a 2.6px dot just beyond each long spoke, and a small solid center dot. One large (radius 34px) and one small (radius 16px) at the top right, one small beside the kicker.
- Boomerang: a bent stroke (a quadratic curve about 90px across) at 16px width with round caps in #E7C98E, one tucked in the top right corner and one in the bottom right margin.
- Keep every ornament out of the plot area.

Layout:
- Kicker, title and subtitle stacked top left. Plot below, leaving a 150px right margin for direct labels (no legend box).

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines at quarter steps in brown at 16% opacity, 1.2px. A 2px brown baseline at 90% opacity. Y labels right-aligned, "%" on the top label only. X labels every other tick.

Marks:
- Line chart: 4px straight segments with round joins and caps, and a 6px round dot marker at every data point with a 2.5px cream #F4E8D0 ring so dots look punched out of the line. Direct labels at the right end of each line, nudged apart if lines converge.
- Bar chart: bars with fully rounded tops (radius half the bar width, like a pill standing up), flat series colors, a 2.5px cream gap between adjacent bars in a group, and the value in Josefin Sans 700 above each bar.
- Annotate the headline point with a 13px dashed brown ring (dasharray 3 3) and a short 1.5px leader line to a Yellowtail note.

Avoid: neon or saturated primaries, pure white or black, gradients, drop shadows, and ornaments inside the plot.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the script title is legible at thumbnail size, the direct labels don't overlap each other, the dot rings are visible, and no ornament touches the data.
