Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Microfilm Reader" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a chart projected on the screen of an old microfilm reader in a dim archive reading room. A near-black cabinet, a rounded glowing screen with a sepia vignette and warm edges, a faint film grain, a center reticle and a frame counter. Quiet, warm, monospaced.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Surround: #0F0D0A. Screen bezel: #1B1610 with a 2px #2A2218 edge.
- Screen: a radial gradient centered slightly above middle, #352A1B at the center, #241C12 at 70%, #140F09 at the edge; plus a warm edge glow (#8A5A24 rising from 0 to 32% opacity over the outer 28% of the radius).
- Primary data and highlights: #E8C77A (light amber). Secondary or prior-period series: #9C8558.
- Grid and ticks: #4A3C29. Labels: #B59A66. Footer text: #8A7650.

Typography (Google Fonts): Cutive Mono for everything, regular weight. Title 21px amber stating the finding; subtitle 15px #B59A66 with measure, place and period; axis labels 14px; direct series labels 16px; annotations 13px; counter text 13px with 1.5px letter-spacing; footer 13px.

Layout:
- Title and subtitle on the surround at top left (x 60, y 50 and 78).
- The screen is a rounded rectangle from about (54, 98) to (906, 538), radius 34, with the content clipped to an inner rect radius 30.
- Plot inside the screen from about x 150 to 840 and y 150 to 466.
- Inside the screen, lower left: "REEL 12"; lower right: a frame counter "FRAME 0417" in amber inside a 126 x 21 outline box (1px #4A3C29, radius 3).
- Footer on the surround: source at left, a one-line total comparison at right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #4A3C29, at 3 to 4 round values; labels right-aligned left of the plot with thousands separators. No axis lines. Short 6px ticks under the bottom gridline at each category, uppercase month abbreviations below.
- A thin reticle at the screen center: a 16px-radius circle and four 16px arms starting 20px from center, 1px amber at 40% opacity, drawn under the data.

Marks:
- Line chart: the current series is a 3px amber monotone-smooth line with a soft glow (Gaussian blur 4 merged under the stroke), round caps, a 4.5px glowing end dot; the prior series is a 2px #9C8558 line dashed 6 on 5 with a 3.5px end dot. Direct labels just right of each end point in the series color. One short annotation at the peak (13px amber).
- Bar chart: slim vertical bars (about 45% of the band) in #E8C77A at 85% opacity with the same soft glow and square corners, starting at zero; a prior-period comparison as 2px #9C8558 outline bars or dashed ticks beside them. Values 13px amber above bars.

Texture and effects:
- Film grain over the screen: fractal noise, base frequency 0.85, one octave, tinted warm (about #E6BF73) at 7% opacity.
- Glows must use a filter region covering the whole canvas so they are never clipped.

Avoid: pure white, cool colors, sans-serif type, heavy gridlines, a legend box, sharp screen corners, and grain strong enough to muddy the labels.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the reticle does not hide any data label, the glow is not clipped, end labels fit inside the screen, and the frame counter and reel label sit clear of the axis labels.
