Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Menu Engineering" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a chef-owner's menu review printed on dark stock: espresso background, small-caps serif headline, warm muted category colors. Considered and editorial, like a menu itself.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #1E1714 (espresso) with a 1px #3A2E28 frame inset 20px.
- Category colors: stars #E0A526 (saffron), plowhorses #6E9C72 (sage), puzzles #95A9D6 (dusty blue), dogs #B06A52 (clay).
- Primary text: #F1E6D2 (cream). Secondary text: #A8998A. Gridlines and rules: #3A2E28. The eyebrow uses saffron.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Playfair Display SC 700 for the headline (34px, cream, stating the finding).
- Manrope for everything else: eyebrow 11px 700 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing; subtitle 14px #A8998A with measure and unit; category labels 13px 500 cream right-aligned; value labels 12.5px 700 cream; tags 9px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing; key title 9.5px 700 uppercase; key names 12px 700; key notes 11px; source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow, headline and subtitle across the top; a boxed key (0.8px #A8998A border, about 252 x 104) in the empty lower right of the plot, beside the shortest bars, listing each category with a 10px square, its name and a short definition ("popular, high margin").
- Bars fill the lower three quarters, labels on the left; a footer rule with the source on the left and a one-line arithmetic note on the right supporting the headline.

Axes and grid:
- A value scale above the plot with dollar labels in 11px #A8998A and 1px #3A2E28 vertical gridlines running through the rows. A 1px #A8998A baseline at zero.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars sorted descending, 16px tall on a 27.5px row, with 2px rounded right ends, colored by category. After each bar: the value ("$31.40") 8px from the end, then a pill tag (16px tall, fully rounded, 1px outline and text in the category color, transparent fill) naming the category.
- Line chart: 2.5px lines in the category colors with 4px dots in the series color with a 1.5px espresso ring; at each line end a value label and the same outlined pill tag; the boxed key sits in whichever corner of the plot is empty.

Avoid: gradients, glows, bright pure hues, a white background, and relying on color alone (every mark carries its tag).

When you're done, render the chart and check that bars are sorted, each tag matches its bar color, tags and values never reach the frame, the key box sits in empty space clear of every bar, value and tag, and the headline's comparison is arithmetically true.
