Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Measured Section" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a stratigraphic column from a field geology report. Warm white paper, pale lithology colors, fine black outlines and a scholarly serif. The chart reads bottom to top like rock layers, with named units bracketed at the left.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FBF8F1. Ink and outlines: #2E2A26. Secondary text: #6F665C. Hairlines: #DDD5C8.
- Categories: #EFD98A (pale sand yellow), #7F9176 (gray-green shale), #ADC3DD (blue-gray limestone).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Source Serif 4 throughout. Title 600 28px stating the finding; subtitle italic 400 16px #6F665C with measures and units.
- Small caps-style labels ("GRAIN SIZE", "LITHOLOGY") 600 11px uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing in #6F665C. Scale class labels 600 13px. Axis numbers 12px. Group names 600 15px with an italic 12px description below. Callout 600 15px plus italic 13px. Key entries 15px with totals in 600.

Layout:
- 56px margins. The column sits at x 330 with its vertical thickness axis at its left edge (ticks every 10 m, labels right-aligned 10px left of the axis, italic "m" above).
- A rotated uppercase group title ("BRACKWATER FORMATION", 600 13px, 2px letter-spacing) at the far left inside a 1px square bracket spanning the whole column; member names right-aligned at x 274 each with its own 1px bracket beside the axis.
- A callout with a 0.8px leader and 2.2px dot points from the key bar to a two-line label at x 668; the lithology key with per-class totals, a hairline and a total sits below it.

Axes and grid:
- An ordinal scale runs along the top (for grain size: cl, si, vf, f, m, c, vc, gr at 36px steps) on a 1px #2E2A26 line with 8px ticks, an italic "sand" bracket over vf to vc, and 0.8px #DDD5C8 vertical guides down to the base.
- 1.2px baseline at the bottom; no horizontal gridlines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars stacked bottom to top with no gaps; each bar's height is its thickness (or value A) and its length reaches its class on the top scale (value B). Flat category fills, 0.9px #2E2A26 outlines, square corners, all starting at the axis.
- Line chart: a vertical profile: y is the stacking or ordered variable going up, x the value on the top scale; draw a 1.6px #2E2A26 stepped line (vertical at each boundary) with the area to its left filled in the category colors per segment.

Avoid: saturated colors, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, a legend without totals, and top-to-bottom ordering (oldest or first always at the bottom).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stacked thicknesses add up to the stated total, each bar ends exactly on a scale class, the brackets span the right intervals, and the title's claim matches the thickest bar.
