Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Meal Program" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a hand-set community newsletter. Cream paper, a thin brown masthead rule, warm tomato bars, humanist type and a small italic note in the margin that tells the story. Homely but carefully typeset.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FDF8EE (cream).
- Rules, masthead and notes: #7C4A2D (brown).
- Main bars: #C8553D (warm tomato). Overlay bars for the subset: #F0B7A4 (light tomato).
- Ink: #2E211A. Secondary text: #7D6A5C. Hairlines and gridlines: #E7DCC8. Highlight column for the annotated period: #EFE5D2.

Typography (Google Fonts), lining figures everywhere (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums):
- Alegreya for the title (700, 30px, #2E211A, sentence case, stating the finding), the italic masthead folio ("Winter 2026 · Kitchen Report · Page 3", 400 italic 14px #7D6A5C), the italic running total (15px #7C4A2D) and the italic annotation (15px #7C4A2D).
- Alegreya Sans for the masthead name (700, 13px, uppercase, 3.2px letter-spacing, #7C4A2D), subtitle (16px #7D6A5C), legend (500 14px), bar value labels (700 13px) and subset labels (500 11.5px #7C4A2D), period labels (12.5px, 700 for the first period of each month), source (12px).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Masthead name at left and folio at right on y 50, then a double rule: 1px #7C4A2D at y 62 and 0.5px at y 65.5.
- Title at y 110, subtitle at y 138, then a legend row at y 160 (14px square swatches; the subset swatch has a 1px #C8553D outline) with the italic running total right-aligned on the same row.
- Annotation lines centered over the annotated bar at y 210 and y 229, the plot below from y 262 to a baseline at y 510.
- Footer hairline at y 552 with the source at left and an italic "~ continued on page 4 ~" at right.

Axes and grid:
- No y axis. Faint 0.8px #E7DCC8 gridlines at round values, with only the top one labeled ("500 meals", 12px) at the left edge.
- A 1px #7C4A2D baseline. Period labels centered 20px below it.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered #C8553D bars about 63% of the band (38px at 14 bars). Draw the subset as a lighter #F0B7A4 bar inside each main bar, inset 5px on each side and rising from the baseline, with its value in 11.5px brown 15px below its top. Each main bar carries its total 7px above. The annotated period gets a #EFE5D2 background column and a brown value label.
- Line chart: a 2.5px #C8553D line for the total and a 2px #F0B7A4 line for the subset with a light #F0B7A4 area (30% opacity) beneath it, small square markers (5px) at each point, value labels on the total line only at the extremes and the annotated period.

Labels and annotation:
- One italic Alegreya note of at most two lines, centered above the plot over the annotated period, joined to that bar's value by a 0.9px brown vertical leader ending in a small open arrowhead.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded bars, bright reds, sans-serif titles, dense gridlines, and more than one annotation.

When you're done, render the chart and check that no value label touches another bar, the annotation clears every bar top, figures are lining (not oldstyle), and the double masthead rule is crisp.
