Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Material Board" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an interior designer's finish board. Each bar is a real material sample pinned to a warm white board, labeled with a spec tag, with a project title block in the corner. Quiet, tactile, architectural.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Board: #F7F4EE, with a 1px #DDD6CA rule inset 20px from every edge.
- Material samples (one per category, used as that bar's base color): oak #B98C5A, travertine #D9CCB4, brushed brass #B89A55, linen #E4DDD0, terracotta #B8623F, blackened steel #3B3B3D.
- Ink: #2E2A25 for titles, values and category names. Secondary: #857C70. Rules and gridlines: #DDD6CA. Tags and title block: #FFFFFF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond with lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums): title 36px 600 stating the finding, value labels 24px 600 above each bar, the range figure 44px 600, the project name in the title block 22px 600.
- Work Sans for spec text: eyebrow 11px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in #857C70; subtitle 14px 400 #857C70 with measure and unit; axis numbers 11px; tag code 9.5px 600 with 1.4px letter-spacing; tag name 12px 600; tag finish 10.5px 400; title block captions 8.5px 600 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing, values 12.5px 500; body notes 12.5px; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- Header at x 52: eyebrow baseline 62, title 104, subtitle 132.
- Plot from x 96 to 684, baseline y 432, value scale top at y 176. A 1px #DDD6CA vertical rule at x 704 separates a right column (from x 724) holding a PRICE RANGE label, the range figure, a short three-line note, and the title block (x 724, y 400, 196 x 130, 1px ink border, rules splitting a PROJECT row from a 2 x 2 grid of BOARD, REV, ISSUE, SCALE).
- Source at lower left, y 566.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines at round values: 1px #DDD6CA dotted (1 3), with 11px Work Sans labels right aligned 14px left of the plot, including the unit symbol.
- A 1px #2E2A25 baseline. No y-axis line.

Marks:
- Bar chart: each bar is a 70px wide square-cornered material swatch with its own surface: oak with 22 wavy vertical grain lines (#9A6D3F and #CFA574, 0.5 to 1.4px, 65%); travertine with wavy horizontal veins (#C9B996 and #EAE0CD) and small elliptical pits (#A89573); brushed brass as a horizontal gradient #A3843F, #D4BA7A, #B89A55, #9C7F3E with fine vertical brushing lines (#F1DFA8 and #7F6630, 0.35px); linen as a 3px weave; terracotta with 90 tiny speckles (#8E4629 and #D88A62) and a faint diagonal glaze highlight; blackened steel as a diagonal #4A4A4D to #2B2B2D gradient with fine horizontal scratches (#8A8A8E, 0.4px) and very faint mottling. Every swatch casts a thin shadow as if pinned (dx 1.2, dy 2.2, blur 1.6, #3A2E20 at 28%) and has a 0.8px black outline at 12%.
- A pin head at the top center of every swatch, 10px below its top edge: r 4.2 with a radial gradient #FFFFFF to #9A9590 to #3F3B37 and a small offset shadow.
- Under each swatch, 14px below the baseline, an 84 x 58 white spec tag with a 1px #DDD6CA border and a 4px strip in the material color along its top, holding the code (FN-06), the material name and the finish.
- Line chart: plot a 2px #2E2A25 line over the board, and at each point pin a 22 x 22 square material swatch (texture as above, pin in the center) instead of a dot; put the matching spec tags along the baseline. If there is only one series use oak swatches throughout, with the highest point in blackened steel.

Avoid: rounded corners, glossy 3D, bright saturated colors, gradients on the board itself, legends (the tags label everything) and textures so strong they hide the swatch's base color.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every swatch still reads as its base color at thumbnail size, the pins and value labels don't collide, the tags are evenly spaced and aligned, all text fits inside the title block cells, and the ratio in the title matches the data.
