Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Mass Balance" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a glaciological survey report. Calm, elegant and scientific: gains in cool blue rise above zero, losses in warm red hang below, and a black tick settles the net for each period.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F3F4F6 (pale gray).
- Positive component: #3B73B9 (blue). Negative component: #C2553F (warm red).
- Net mark: #111418 (near black).
- Ink: #23272E. Secondary text: #6A707A. Gridlines: #DADDE2.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Tenor Sans (400 only) throughout. Eyebrow 12px uppercase with 3px letter-spacing in #6A707A. Title 31px #23272E stating the finding. Subtitle 15px #6A707A with measure, unit and period (write ranges as "2005 to 2025"). Tick and year labels 12px. Legend 12.5px. Callouts 12px in the series color. Source 11.5px.
- Use a plain hyphen for negative numbers; Tenor Sans has no minus sign glyph.

Layout:
- 56px left margin for text, plot from x 96 to 904. Title block at the top, a compact legend right-aligned above the plot (12px squares for the two components, a 20px 3px-thick black line for the net).
- Main panel about 250px tall. Below it, a separate strip about 60px tall for a cumulative running total with its own heading line, sharing the x positions.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 0.8px #DADDE2 at whole units; a 1px #23272E zero line. Signed y labels ("+2", "0", "-1") right-aligned 12px left of the plot, with a small unit label above.
- Year labels every fifth year and on the last year; small 4px ticks for the years between.

Marks:
- Bar chart: diverging vertical bars 22px wide, square-cornered, the positive component rising from zero in #3B73B9 and the negative component falling from zero in #C2553F in the same column. The net value as a black tick 10px wider than the bar, 2.6px thick, over a 5px page-colored knockout so it reads on either color. Label only the best and worst net values in 12px of the matching color.
- Line chart: a 2.4px #111418 line for the net with small square markers, drawn over a pale envelope: #3B73B9 at 25% opacity from zero up to the positive component and #C2553F at 25% opacity from zero down to the negative component.
- Cumulative strip: a 1.6px #C2553F line at 60% opacity with a #C2553F area at 12% opacity back to zero, dashed (2 on, 3 off) gridlines, and a 3px end dot; state the final cumulative total in the strip heading.

Avoid: rounded bars, gradients, shadows, a dual axis (keep the cumulative total in its own strip), and more than two accent colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every bar starts at zero, each net tick equals the sum of its two components, the title's count matches the data, and no year labels collide.
