Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Magnitude Frequency" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from a seismology journal. Plain white, a full box frame with inward ticks, open circles on a log axis and one straight dark red fit with its parameter printed in a small box. Rigorous, sparse and quietly elegant.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Frame, ticks, axis titles and main ink: #1E1E1E. Secondary text #5E5E5E. Decade gridlines #E6E6E6.
- Primary data points: #1F3A5F (deep navy) outlines on white fill.
- Secondary data points: #9A9A9A (mid gray) solid squares.
- Fit line, parameter box border and parameter text: #9B1B1B (dark red).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Bodoni 600 for the title (30px, #1E1E1E, sentence case, stating the finding) and for the fitted parameter inside the box (22px, #9B1B1B, e.g. "b = 1.02 ± 0.01").
- Oxygen for everything else: subtitle 14px #5E5E5E (measure, catalog, period, event count), tick labels 12px #5E5E5E, axis titles 13px #1E1E1E (the y title rotated -90 degrees), legend 12px, notes 11 to 12px, a bold 12px label for the threshold line with a 9px subscript.

Layout:
- 56px side margins; title near y 64, subtitle near y 94.
- A closed rectangular frame from x 104 to 880 and y 132 to 492, 1.1px #1E1E1E.
- The parameter box sits inside the frame at the top right (220 x 74 px, white fill, 1px dark red border, 14px inner padding), with a small gray line of method text under the value. A three-row legend directly beneath it.
- Source line at the bottom left, 11px #5E5E5E.

Axes and grid:
- Log y axis with decade labels written in full with thousands separators (1, 10, 100, 1,000...). Faint 1px #E6E6E6 gridlines at decades only; minor ticks for 2 to 9 inside both the left and right frame edges (5px, 0.7px).
- Linear x axis with major ticks (8px) and half-step minor ticks (4px) pointing inward from both the bottom and top edges; labels only on majors.
- A threshold (here the magnitude of completeness) is a 1px #1E1E1E dashed (5 on, 4 off) vertical line across the frame, labeled at its lower left ("Mc = 1.4" with a subscript c, plus "completeness" in 11px gray).

Marks:
- Line chart: points as open circles (r 4.6, white fill, 1.5px #1F3A5F stroke) with no connecting line; a secondary series as 6.8px #9A9A9A squares. The fitted model is a straight 2.2px #9B1B1B line over the fitted range, continued back past the threshold as a thin 1.2px dashed (3 on, 3 off) extension. Compute the fit from the data and print it with its uncertainty.
- Bar chart: thin #1F3A5F outlined bars (1.5px stroke, white fill, about 60% of the band) inside the same closed frame with inward ticks, secondary values as #9A9A9A filled bars behind them, any trend or fit as the same straight 2.2px #9B1B1B line, and the parameter box at the top right. Bars start at zero, so use a linear axis for bars.

Avoid: color fills beyond the navy, gray and dark red, gridlines at minor ticks, rounded corners, drop shadows, chart junk and a legend outside the frame.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the log decades are evenly spaced, the fit line and printed parameter come from the same computation, the threshold line sits at its exact value, and no point hides a tick label.
