Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Magazine Ad" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a full-page appliance advertisement in a faded postwar home magazine, printed in two inks. Confident sales copy, a fat display headline, halftone-dot bars with a hint of misregistration, and a mail-in coupon.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #F1E6CE for the canvas, with a radial vignette that fades to #D9C79F at 55% opacity at the corners (clear in the middle 55%).
- Ink one, teal: #1F6F78 for the headline, ordinary data marks, value labels and hairline rules.
- Ink two, warm red: #C8472F for the highlighted (latest) mark, the kicker line, the thick rule under the subtitle, the coupon border and the misregistered offset copies.
- Body ink: #3A3027. Secondary text: #7A6A55. Coupon fill: #F7EEDB.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Abril Fatface for the headline (44px teal, stating the finding), the kicker ("Colder. Quieter. Roomier.", 21px red), value labels (17px; 22px for the highlighted mark) and the coupon heading (19px teal, 1px letter-spacing).
- Libre Baskerville for everything else: subtitle 15px italic stating measure, unit and period; ad copy 11.5px regular on 18px leading; category labels 12px (700 red for the highlighted one); tiny uppercase eyebrows and the footer brand 10px 700 with 2.5 to 4px letter-spacing in #7A6A55; source 11px.

Layout:
- 48px margins. Eyebrow row at y 40 ("ADVERTISEMENT" left, an issue line right). Headline baseline y 93, subtitle y 126.
- Under the subtitle a 3px red rule, then 4px below it a 0.8px teal hairline, full width.
- Chart on the left from x 48 to 596. A 0.8px teal vertical rule at x 620. Right column from x 640 to 912: the kicker, then two columns of ad copy (at x 640 and x 784, 8 lines each, 128px wide), then the coupon.
- Coupon: a 272 x 130 box at the bottom right, 1.5px red dashed border (6 on 4 off), heading, an italic one-line offer, and two fill-in rows ("Name", "Town") with 0.8px underlines.
- Footer: 0.8px teal hairline at y 546, "Source: ..." left and a spaced uppercase company line right at y 568.

Axes and grid:
- No y axis and no gridlines; every mark carries its value. A 1.5px #3A3027 baseline. Category labels 22px below it.

Texture (two-color print):
- Halftone: fill marks with a 45-degree dot screen, dots of radius 1.95 on a 4.6px grid, in the mark's ink over the bare paper.
- Misregistration: behind each mark draw its outline in the other ink, 1.3px at 80% opacity, offset 2.6px right and 2px up. The headline gets the same trick: a red copy at 55% opacity offset 1.8px right and 1.2px down, under the teal headline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars about 62% of the band (38px at 9 bars) with the halftone fill, a 1.6px solid outline in the same ink and a solid 7px cap along the top edge. Teal for all bars except the latest, which is red with a teal offset outline. Value labels 11px above.
- Line chart: a 3px teal line with a halftone-dot area fill beneath it (same screen), a 1.3px red copy of the line offset 2.6px right and 2px up behind it, and solid teal square markers (7px) at each point; the latest point and its label in red.

Avoid: gradients on marks, drop shadows, rounded corners, a third ink, a legend box, sans-serif type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dot screen reads as a tint at thumbnail size, the red offset shows only as a thin fringe, the copy columns do not collide with the coupon, and the growth claim in the headline is arithmetically true.
