Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lunar Day" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a plate from a planetary science field report. Quiet, gray and precise: regolith-colored paper with a fine dust speckle, charcoal ink, a literary italic headline over typewriter-like mono labels, and a single cool blue used sparingly for the cold side of the story.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #E3E1DB (regolith gray) across the whole canvas.
- Ink: #2A2B2E (charcoal) for the data line, title, strong labels, axis and glyphs.
- Accent: #3D6FA8 (cool blue), only for the low-extreme marker, its label and the labels of the shaded "off" period (for example "LUNAR NIGHT").
- Shaded periods: #CBC8C0 at 75% opacity. Lit/highlight tone: #FAF9F6 (used for the lit part of phase glyphs and light speckles).
- Secondary text: #6A6863. Unlit phase disc: #A9A69E. Dark speckle: #8F8C84.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Lora italic 600, 33px, charcoal, for the title stating the finding. Lora 400, 15.5px, #6A6863 for the subtitle with measure and unit. Lora italic 13px for the source line.
- Space Mono for all ticks and labels: tick labels 12px 400 #6A6863 (use a true minus sign U+2212 for negatives); header strip and axis title 10.5 to 11px uppercase with 1.2 to 1.5px letter-spacing; annotation labels 10.5 to 11px 700 uppercase with 1 to 1.6px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. A mono header strip at y 58 (subject left, a site code right), title baseline about 100, subtitle about 128.
- A phase strip at y 170 spanning the plot width, then the plot from x 104 to 904, y 214 to 486. Source at bottom left (y 572), a mono technical note at bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines every major tick: 0.5px charcoal at 22% opacity, dotted (1 on, 3 off). The zero line solid 0.9px at 70% opacity with its label in charcoal instead of gray.
- The unit ("°C") sits above the top y tick label. No y-axis line.
- A 1.2px charcoal x-axis baseline with 5px ticks, labels 22px below, and an uppercase axis title right-aligned 44px below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a single 2.6px charcoal line with round joins and caps, drawn densely sampled with straight segments so sharp physical transitions stay sharp. High extreme: a solid charcoal dot (r 4.5) with a 700 caps label to its upper right. Low extreme: a blue dot (r 5) with a 2px paper-colored ring and a blue caps label to its upper left.
- Bar chart: square-cornered charcoal bars about 55% of the band width; bars that fall in the shaded period sit on the gray shading unchanged, and the single lowest bar is blue with the same caps label; value labels in Space Mono 11px above bars.
- Shaded periods (night, off-hours, outages): full-height #CBC8C0 rectangles at 75% opacity with a blue 10.5px 700 caps label centered 22px below the top of the plot.

Labels and annotation:
- Transition glyphs at each boundary between shaded and unshaded periods: a 0.8px dashed charcoal vertical line (3 on, 3 off), interrupted by a filled charcoal half-disc (radius 9) sitting on a 26px, 1.3px horizon line 48px below the plot top, with a small triangle above the disc pointing up for a rise and down for a set. Its label (for example "SUNRISE DAY 7.4") sits 20px to the side of the glyph, inside the shaded region.
- Phase strip: a 0.6px charcoal line at 35% opacity with evenly spaced 8.5px-radius phase discs aligned to the x scale; each disc is #A9A69E with the lit portion in #FAF9F6 (a semicircle plus a terminator half-ellipse) and a 0.9px charcoal outline. Label the strip "PHASE" in 10px mono to its left.

Texture:
- A fine speckle over the paper: about 2,400 tiny dots (radius 0.35 to 1.45px, mostly under 0.7px), about 62% dark #8F8C84 at 32% opacity and the rest light #FAF9F6 at 55% opacity, randomly scattered with a fixed seed. It must stay subtle enough to vanish behind text.

Avoid: color fills under the line, gradients, drop shadows, bold sans-serif fonts, more than one accent color, rounded bar corners and a legend (label directly).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the title's swing equals the max minus the min in the data, the glyph labels sit inside the shaded regions without touching the line, the phase discs line up with the x scale, and the speckle never reduces text legibility.
