Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Long Read" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a chart embedded in a thoughtful longform magazine article. Quiet, literary and unhurried: a large serif title, a wide measure, earthy colors and a legend written as prose.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F5EFE3 (warm cream).
- Ink: #2A2621 for the title, row labels and annotation. Muted text: #6E665A. Footer rule: #DCD2C0.
- Series, in order: #4E5A2C (olive), #C9795B (clay), #DDC193 (sand), #3F5566 (slate).
- The kicker uses the clay color. When the sand series is named in running text, write the word in #A07A42 so it stays readable on cream.
- Segment gaps and dot rings use the page color.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Instrument Serif for the title (400, 40px, sentence case, stating the finding), the legend sentence (400, 20px, with each series name in italic in its color) and the annotation (italic 16px).
- Instrument Sans for the kicker (600, 12px uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing), the subtitle (400, 16px, #6E665A, measure, unit and year), row labels (500, 16px), in-bar values (500, 13px), axis labels (400, 12px) and source (12px).

Layout:
- Wide article measure: 80px left margin, content to x 880.
- Kicker at y 66, title at y 118, subtitle at y 150, legend sentence at y 192.
- Row labels in a 110px column on the left, bars from x 190 to x 880, rows 58px apart starting around y 264.
- A 1px #DCD2C0 rule at y 552 with the source line under it.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no axis line. A light percent scale under the last bar: 6px ticks (0.8px #6E665A) with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% labels.

Marks:
- Bar chart: one 100% stacked horizontal bar per category, 36px tall, square corners, segments in the series order with 2px cream gaps between them (hairline gaps, no strokes). Percent labels centered in each segment of at least 8%: white on olive, clay and slate, ink #2A2621 on sand.
- Line chart: 2px lines in the same four colors with straight segments, no markers except a 4px dot at the last point, lines named at their right ends in Instrument Sans 500 14px in the series color. Same cream page, sentence legend and wide margins.

Labels and annotation:
- The legend is a sentence with colored italic words, e.g. "Homes are heated by a heat pump, a gas boiler, wood or pellets or oil."
- Exactly one thin bracket annotation: a 0.8px ink bracket spanning one notable segment with 6px end ticks, a short 8px stem up from its middle and an italic Instrument Serif note beside it ("41%, the highest heat pump share of any region").

Avoid: saturated or bright colors, legend boxes, gridlines, borders around bars, shadows, rounded corners, and more than one annotation.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each bar sums to exactly 100%, the gaps are visible cream hairlines, the colored words in the legend match the segment colors, the bracket spans exactly the segment it describes and the title's claim is true.
