Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Linocut" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a relief print cut by hand from linoleum. Ink-black ground with the image carved away to warm off-white, a second block in brick red for the one thing that matters. Earthy, handmade and deliberate.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground ink: #141312 for the whole canvas, with a faint broad mottle (low-frequency noise, about 12% visible).
- Carved paper: #EFE8DA (warm off-white) for text, bars, baseline, border and chips.
- Second block: #A8432F (muted brick red) for the highlighted bar, its value and a small square monogram block.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IM Fell English for the title (40px, off-white, sentence case, states the finding) and the monogram letters (19px, ground color on red).
- IM Fell DW Pica for everything else: subtitle italic 19px; values 21px (26px red for the highlight); category labels 17px; source italic 15px; a 12px uppercase colophon with 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- A carved border: an off-white band about 6px wide, 22px inside the canvas, whose edges wobble by about 1px and whose corners are nicked off diagonally (9px).
- Title at x 58, y 94; subtitle at y 126. Chart from about y 176 to the baseline at y 484, labels 30px under it. Source bottom left at y 560, colophon right, and a 38px red monogram block with carved initials at the lower right corner.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no y-axis: every bar carries its value 14px above it. A hand-cut baseline: a 4px off-white band with edges that wobble by about 0.7px, running 16px past the outer bars.

Marks:
- Bar chart: off-white bars about 70% of the band with carved edges (points every 12 to 14px, jittered by about 1.2px), the highlight bar in red. Inside every bar, gouge striations: thin vertical slivers of ground ink (tapered, 0.7 to 1.6px wide, 18 to 78px long, about 9px apart, slightly leaning) scattered down the bar. A few tiny off-white chip triangles (2 to 4px) between bars near the baseline where the knife slipped.
- Line chart: a 5px off-white carved line (edges jittered as above) with small carved square points, the highlighted segment and its end point in red, gouge striations running parallel under the line in a band that fades out toward the baseline, the same hand-cut baseline.

Texture:
- Ink pull: displace all carved shapes with noise (base frequency 0.9, scale 1.3) and punch out a sparse speckle (noise base frequency 0.5, alpha = 10 * noise - 6.6) so the off-white looks printed, not flat.

Avoid: gradients, glows, smooth vector-perfect edges, more than one accent color, gray tones, drop shadows, and gridlines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the edges look carved but the bar heights still read accurately, the striations stay inside the bars, chips never touch text, only one bar is red, and the title is true for the data.
