Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lime Plaster" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a limewashed wall in a hillside village. Chalky, warm and quiet, with earth-pigment colors, a plastered niche for the title and plenty of air around everything.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Wall (canvas): #F3EEE3, overlaid with a faint mottle (see Texture).
- Title niche: #E8E0CF with a soft inner shadow.
- Series: raw ochre #C9962F (lead series), olive #4A5A1E, faded sienna #B0603C. Assign the ochre to the most important series.
- Ink for the title: #3B3226. Secondary text: #86796A. Gridline scratches and footer rule: #B9AE9C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond 600 for the title (36px, #3B3226, sentence case, stating the finding) with lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums), and 700 at 20px for direct series labels in each series color.
- Alegreya Sans for everything else: eyebrow 12px 500 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in #86796A; subtitle 16px #86796A on two lines (measure, then unit and period); axis labels 14px #86796A; peak value labels 15px 700 in the series color; source 13px italic; footnote 13px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins, generous whitespace.
- The title sits in a hand-cut niche at the top left: about 612 x 104px starting at (56, 40), corner radius 14px, its edges very slightly wavering (1px) so it looks hand-plastered rather than machined. Eyebrow 34px below its top edge, title 76px below it, both indented 26 to 28px.
- The subtitle sits to the right of the niche, vertically centered on it.
- Plot area roughly x 96 to 790, y 196 to 500, leaving about 110px on the right for direct labels.
- Footer: a faint 0.9px hand-drawn rule at y 548, "Source: illustrative data" in italic on the left and a one-line note on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines at wide intervals (5 steps for the full range) drawn as barely visible scratches: 0.8px #B9AE9C at 70% opacity, each a polyline that wanders up to 0.7px vertically every 60px, round caps.
- Y labels right-aligned 16px left of the plot. No y-axis line.
- Baseline: 1.2px #3B3226 at 55% opacity. Category labels centered 26px below it.

Marks:
- Line chart: softly smoothed monotone curves (no overshoot), 3.2px for the lead series and 2.6px for the others, round caps and joins. The lead series gets an area fill down to the baseline, a vertical gradient of #C9962F from 26% to 3% opacity. The third series is dashed (7 on, 5 off) so it stays distinct without color. Draw the lead last so it sits on top. Circular markers ONLY at each series' seasonal peaks: a 6px radius ring (2.4px stroke in the series color, filled with the wall color) with a 2.4px solid center dot, and the value (for example "23.8k") 16px above in 15px 700 series color.
- Bar chart: slender bars in the same earth colors (ochre for the lead or highlighted bar, olive and sienna for others), 6px top corner radius, square at the baseline, with a faint 10% ochre tint panel behind the highlighted bar instead of an area fill. Value labels in Alegreya Sans 700 above only the peak bars; same scratch gridlines.
- Direct labels: series names at the line ends in Cormorant Garamond 700 20px series color, with a 1px leader in the series color when a label must be nudged apart. No boxed legend.

Texture:
- Mottle: fractalNoise turbulence, baseFrequency 0.012 x 0.016, 3 octaves, tinted warm brown (rgb 0.55, 0.49, 0.40), applied at 55% opacity so it reads as soft plaster clouds.
- Grain: fractalNoise at baseFrequency 0.9, tinted darker brown, 18% opacity.
- Niche shadow: an inner shadow (blur 4, offset y 3, #6B5A40 at 28%).

Avoid: pure white, cool grays, saturated or neon colors, heavy black gridlines, markers on every point, drop shadows on data, and a boxed legend.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the mottle stays subtle behind the text, peak markers appear only at seasonal peaks, peak labels do not touch any line, the direct labels do not collide, and the title's claim matches the data.
