Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lightning Talk" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a five-minute lightning talk slide built to read from the back row. Highlighter yellow, chunky black shapes, huge numbers, one sentence to remember.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FFE94D (highlighter yellow), full bleed.
- Ink and marks: #0A0A0A. Totals: #FFFFFF fill with a 4px #0A0A0A outline.
- Secondary text: #5C5314 (dark olive) for the subtitle and source only.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Archivo Black for the title (40px, -1px letter-spacing, stating the finding), bar value labels (30px on totals, 24px on steps), the timer (28px, tabular figures) and the takeaway (32px, -0.6px letter-spacing).
- Archivo for everything else: subtitle 16px 500 #5C5314; category labels 14px on two lines (first line 700, second 500); legend 14px 700; footer tag 12px 800 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at y 84, subtitle at y 118.
- Countdown badge top right: 156 x 52 black rectangle with 12px radius, a yellow clock icon (11px ring, 3px stroke, two hands) and "04:59" in white.
- Legend at the top right of the plot at y 146 to 164: 18px squares with 2.5px black outlines for Increase (solid), Decrease (hatched), Total (white).
- Plot baseline at y 432 as a 4px black line from margin to margin; category labels at y 456 and 474.
- A takeaway band below: a 10 x 44 black bar at the left margin, then one oversized sentence in Archivo Black. Source at bottom left, a "LIGHTNING TALK 3 OF 12" tag at bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis, no gridlines, no tick marks. Every bar carries its value in bold above it.

Marks:
- Bar chart (waterfall): 80px wide bars on 116px bands, square corners. Totals: white with 4px black outline. Increases: solid black. Decreases: 4px black outline filled with 45-degree black hatching (4px black stripes on a 9px yellow repeat). Connect each bar's end level to the next bar with a 2.5px black dashed line (6 on, 5 off). Step labels read "+3" or "−6" (true minus sign).
- Ordinary bar chart: the same chunky black square bars, the one you want the audience to remember as white with a 4px black outline, values in Archivo Black above.
- Line chart: a 6px black line with square joins, 12px black square markers at each point, the key point as a white square with a 4px black outline, values in Archivo Black above key points only.

Avoid: gradients, rounded corners on data, thin strokes, light gray text, more than three colors, and any small detail that would not read from the back of a room.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the waterfall steps add up exactly to the final total, value labels do not touch the legend or bars, the title does not run into the timer badge and the takeaway is arithmetically true.
