Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lightbox" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a backlit acrylic sign panel in a gallery or transit hall. Milky white light, crisp black cut vinyl, and one red vinyl accent. Graphic, bold and calm.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Panel: a radial gradient centered slightly below the middle (480, 330), radius 580: #FFFFFF at the center, #FAFAF7 at 55%, #EEEFEC at 85%, #D9DBD9 at the edge, so the corners fall off softly. Add a second radial hotspot at (470, 300), radius 260, #FFFFFF at 90% opacity fading to 0.
- Frame: a 12px brushed aluminum border around the whole canvas, a diagonal gradient #DDE1E4, #B9BEC2, #C9CDD0, #8E9398, with a 2px #7D8287 outer line and a 2px #6F7479 inner reveal where the acrylic meets the frame. A 10px gray shadow lip (#9DA2A6 at 35% fading to 0) under the top edge.
- Vinyl black: #111111 for titles, data marks and value labels.
- Red vinyl: #D7191F for the one focus series and a short accent bar above the title. Never more than one red series.
- Gray vinyl: #5B5E61 for the subtitle, notes and source.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Archivo Black for the title (34px, -0.6px letter-spacing, #111111, stating the finding), column headers (22px) and all values (18px; 20px for the focus series).
- Archivo for labels: category names 17px 600, the focus series name in Archivo Black 18px red; subtitle 17px 500 gray; notes and source 12px 500 gray.

Layout:
- 60px inner margins. A 44 x 8 px red bar at y 56, the title baseline at y 112, subtitle at y 142.
- Plot from about y 196 to y 540. A thin rule (1.5px #111111 at 18% opacity) at y 548 with the source on the left and a one-line note on the right, both at y 570.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis, no gridlines, no tick labels: every endpoint carries its own value.
- For a slope chart, two 3px vertical posts in #111111 at 14% opacity at the two time points (x 372 and x 648), with the year above each in Archivo Black 22px.

Marks:
- Line chart: flat, sharp vinyl strokes with butt caps and no shadow or glow. Context series 5px #111111; the focus series 9px #D7191F drawn last. Solid endpoint dots (r 7.5; r 10 for the focus). For a slope chart put value then name on each side: values 26px from the dot, names 66px from the dot, right-aligned on the left and left-aligned on the right. For a time-series line, label each line at its end instead of a legend.
- Bar chart: solid #111111 square-cornered bars cut like vinyl, about 60% of the band, the one focus bar #D7191F, values in Archivo Black 18px just above or beyond each bar, no gridlines.

Texture:
- Only the panel glow. The vinyl is perfectly flat and opaque with razor edges.

Avoid: drop shadows on text or marks, gradients on the vinyl, rounded caps, more than one red series, colored backgrounds, legends when direct labels fit.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the panel corners are visibly darker than the center, the frame reads as thin aluminum, labels never collide at either end, and only one series is red.
