Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Light Meter" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a landscape photographer's field guide read at dusk. Deep blue-black page, an elegant serif headline, one luminous pale gold line and soft washes of warm and cool light marking the special parts of the range. Calm, literate and quietly atmospheric.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #0D1422 (night blue).
- The data line and its callouts: #F4D58D (pale gold). The eyebrow is also pale gold.
- Warm band: #E39B4B as a vertical gradient from 34% opacity at the top to 8% at the bottom; its label #F0B878.
- Cool band: #5C86D6 as a vertical gradient from 36% to 8% opacity; its label #8FB0EA.
- Title and event labels: #E9E4D8 (parchment). Secondary text: #8C95A8.
- Gridlines #1E2838; baseline and ticks #4A5670; event rules #E9E4D8 at 55% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant 600 for the title (38px, #E9E4D8, sentence case, stating the finding) and Cormorant 600 italic for data callouts (18 to 20px, pale gold). Always set font-variant-numeric: lining-nums on Cormorant, whose default figures are oldstyle.
- Figtree for everything else: eyebrow 600 11.5px uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing, subtitle 400 15px #8C95A8, tick labels 500 12px #8C95A8 (y labels prefixed with the unit, "EV 12"), event rule labels 600 11px uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing in parchment, band labels 700 10px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing, small notes 400 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title, subtitle, then the plot (about x 92 to 904, y 196 to 500). Event rules extend 30px above the plot with their labels on top, centered.
- Footer row at about y 562: source on the left, a compact legend of the two bands (14 x 10 px swatches plus text) on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #1E2838 gridlines at even steps; no vertical grid. Y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- A 1px #4A5670 baseline with 5px ticks and labels 22px below.
- Thin 0.8px vertical rules (parchment, 55% opacity) for key moments such as sunrise, noon and sunset, each labelled at the top with its name and value.

Marks:
- Line chart: a smooth monotone 2.6px #F4D58D line with round caps over a glow copy (7px wide, 28% opacity, Gaussian blur 5). Background bands shade meaningful ranges (full plot height, gradients as above) with short uppercase labels at the bottom of each band. Mark the key points with 5px circles filled with the background and a 2px gold ring, each with an italic serif value callout and an optional 12px Figtree note under it.
- Bar chart: slim bars (45% of the band) filled with #F4D58D at 85% opacity with 2px top corner radius, the same background bands behind them, values above in Cormorant 600 italic 16px pale gold, and the highlighted bar at full opacity with a soft 5px gold glow.

Effects:
- Glows use a userSpaceOnUse filter region covering the canvas so nothing is clipped.

Avoid: more than one line color, saturated neon, heavy grid, boxed legends, oldstyle figures in the serif, and bands without a legend.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the gold line is the brightest thing on the page, band labels stay inside their bands, the event labels do not collide with each other, and the numbers in the title match the data.
