Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Length of Stay" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a clinical quality dashboard on dark slate. Soft pastel lines each wrapped in a thin translucent spread band, with one well-placed annotation explaining the change.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #171C22 (dark slate).
- Series, in order: #7FB2F0 (soft blue), #F2B45A (amber), #F28BB8 (pink).
- Title and primary text #E8ECF1; secondary text #8893A0; annotation text and dashed marker #C9D1DB; gridlines #252C35 with a slightly brighter #3A434F zero line.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Gabarito throughout. Eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 1.8px letter-spacing, muted. Title 29px 700 with -0.3px letter-spacing stating the change. Subtitle 15px 400 muted with measure, unit, spread measure, place and period. Axis labels 12.5 to 13px; year labels 12.5px 600 in primary text. End labels: series name 14px 700 in the series color, value 13px in #C9D1DB below it. Annotation 13px 600, with a 12px muted second line.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Plot from x 76 to 790, y 178 to 494, leaving a right gutter for end labels 14px past the last point.
- "Days" unit label above the y axis labels.
- Source on one line at the bottom left, 12.5px muted, explaining what the bands show.

Axes and grid:
- y from 0 with 1px gridlines every 2 units, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. No axis lines.
- x: month abbreviations every quarter, with the year in bold under each January.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2.6px lines with straight segments and round joins, a 4px end dot with a 2px page-color ring. Each line sits on its interquartile band: fill at 14% opacity in the series color, edged top and bottom by 0.8px lines at 45% opacity. Keep bands thin enough that neighboring series barely overlap.
- Process change: a 1.2px dashed (3 on, 3 off) #C9D1DB vertical line from above the plot to the baseline, topped by a 3.5px dot and a two-line label to its right; the period after it gets a barely visible 1.8% white wash.
- A rounded pill (22px tall, fully rounded, series color at 16% opacity) with the before and after values in 12.5px 700 series color, e.g. "7.4", a small stroked arrow path (11px shaft, 4px head, 1.6px round-capped stroke; the font has no arrow glyph), then "6.1 days", followed by a 12px muted caption naming the two periods compared.
- Bar chart: grouped square-cornered bars per period in the three series colors, with thin #C9D1DB whiskers for the interquartile range, the same dashed process-change marker and end-of-row labels.

Avoid: a legend box (label line ends directly), saturated neon colors, glow, smoothing, and bands dark enough to hide gridlines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that end labels don't collide (nudge them apart vertically if they do), the before/after pill values and the title's difference are arithmetically consistent, and the annotation never crosses a line.
