Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Leg Deltas" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a race debrief handout on warm paper. Editorial serif headings, crisp diverging bars in green and red, and a small numbered position trace on top that tells the story at a glance.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FBF9F4 (warm white).
- Gains (positive values): #2A9D8F (sea green). Losses (negative values): #E63946 (signal red).
- Ink for the title, baseline, position trace and category names: #1D2B3A.
- Secondary text: #6F6A60. Gridlines and rules: #E4DED2.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Spectral for the title (600, 30px, #1D2B3A, sentence case stating the finding), the subtitle (italic 400, 15px, #6F6A60) and category names (600, 15px, e.g. "Leg 3").
- Work Sans for everything else, with tabular figures: eyebrow 600 11.5px uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing; panel captions 600 10.5px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing; category types under names 600 10.5px uppercase with 1.8px letter-spacing (small caps look); axis labels 12px; value labels 700 16px in the bar's color with a leading "+" or a true minus sign (U+2212).

Layout:
- Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 88, subtitle at y 116, left margin 56.
- A position strip panel from about y 154 to 272 above the bars, with its own inverted place scale (1st at the top), then the diverging bar panel from about y 296 to 488, then category names at y 522 and types at y 540 under a 1px rule at y 504.
- Plot columns from x 150 to 904, one equal slot per category.
- "Source: ..." at bottom left in 12px; a one-line definition of the measure at bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Bar panel: gridlines at even values (1px #E4DED2), labeled "+4", "+2", "−2", "−4"; the zero baseline 1.4px #1D2B3A. Colored captions "GAINED" (green) and "LOST" (red) at the far left beside the positive and negative halves.
- Position strip: dotted (2 on, 3 off) #E4DED2 guides at 1st, 5th and 10th, labeled "1st", "5th", "10th" in 11px.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered diverging bars 50px wide centered in each slot, green above zero and red below, value labels 9px above positive bars and 21px below negative bar ends.
- Position strip (the second measure lives in its own panel, never on a second axis): a 1.6px ink polyline through circles (r 9.5, page fill, 1.6px ink stroke) holding the place number in 700 11px, the starting value at the left edge labeled "GUN", and the final circle filled ink (r 11) with a page-colored number.
- Line chart: draw the main series as a 2px ink line with the area between the line and zero filled green above and red below (25% opacity), plus the same numbered position strip on top if a rank series exists.

Avoid: a dual axis, rounded bars, gradients, shadows, a legend box (colors are explained by the GAINED/LOST captions), and hyphens in place of the minus sign.

When you're done, render the chart and check that gains plus losses equal the net change stated in the title, the position trace reads 1st at the top, the circles do not collide with the strip caption or gridline labels, and every bar has a signed label.
