Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lead Time Bands" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a supply chain analyst's distribution chart. Quiet concrete gray, cool blues and a single dark median, showing spread and risk rather than just an average.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #E6E6E2 (light concrete). Primary ink: #1E262B. Secondary text: #5C6367. Gridlines and key border: #CBCBC6.
- Median line and its labels: #0F4C5C (dark petrol blue).
- Interquartile band (25th to 75th percentile): #7FA6C8.
- Outer band (10th to 90th percentile): #C8DAE9.
- Outlier dots: #5B6878 (slate) at 85% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Archivo for the headline (700, 26px, -0.3px letter-spacing, ink, stating the finding), the subtitle (400, 15.5px, #5C6367) and the event label (600, 13.5px).
- Archivo Narrow for axis ticks (500, 14px, #5C6367), the eyebrow (600, 13px uppercase, 1.8px letter-spacing, petrol), key entries (400, 13px), key heading (600, 11.5px uppercase, 1.4px letter-spacing), value callouts (600, 14px petrol) and the source (12.5px).

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow, headline, subtitle stacked at the top; the plot from about y 158 to y 480 with the y ticks right-aligned 12px left of it and a small "days" unit label above the top tick.
- A fan-chart style key inside the plot's empty top left corner: a 232 x 136px box filled with the page color at 92% opacity and a 1px #CBCBC6 border, headed "HOW TO READ". It shows a miniature stacked swatch (34px wide): an outlier dot on top, then the pale outer band, the medium interquartile band inside it and the median line through the middle, each with a short 12px leader to its label.
- Source line alone at the bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Four or five horizontal 1px #CBCBC6 gridlines, no vertical gridlines. A 1px ink x-axis with 5px ticks and "Wk N" labels.

Marks:
- Line chart: draw the outer band as a filled area between the 10th and 90th percentiles, the interquartile band on top of it, then the median as a 2.5px petrol line with round caps. Use a monotone curve for all three. Scatter outlier dots (r 3) above the 90th percentile with a small horizontal jitter of up to 4px. Mark the pre-event and peak medians with r 4.5 petrol dots ringed 2px in the page color, labeled with thin petrol leaders that drop below the bands.
- Bar chart: draw each category as a range bar: a pale #C8DAE9 bar from the 10th to the 90th percentile (about 60% of the band), a narrower #7FA6C8 bar from the 25th to the 75th (about 36%), a 2.5px petrol tick across the full pale width at the median, and slate outlier dots above.
- Event marker: a 1.2px ink vertical dashed line (4 on 3 off) at the disruption, capped by an 8px ink square at the top, labeled to its right with a 13.5px 600 title and a muted 13px sub-line.

Avoid: a legend row separate from the key, gradients, drop shadows, bright or warm colors, and hiding the bands behind a thick median.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the bands are properly nested (10th <= 25th <= median <= 75th <= 90th everywhere), the key does not cover any data or outlier dots, and the headline numbers match the median values you labeled.
