Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lead Came" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a stained glass window in a small cathedral. The plot area is a leaded panel of pale jewel glass, and the data line is itself a lead came carrying a thread of warm amber light. Crafted and calm, never kitsch.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F3EDE0 (warm cathedral cream).
- Came, frame, title ink and main text: #2B2926 (charcoal).
- Pane lead lines inside the panel: #9C9488 (a light warm gray, so the panes never compete with the data came).
- Amber glow and marker fill: #E0A040; bright core line #F2C878.
- Very pale jewel pane tints, cycled so no two neighbors match: #EFDCD4 (rose), #DEE1E6 (cobalt), #F1E4C6 (gold), #DFE7D4 (green), #E7DDE3 (violet), #EDE6D7 (clear).
- Secondary text: #75695A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cinzel 700, 30px, #2B2926 for the title, stating the finding. Cinzel 400, 11px, 1.5px letter-spacing for a small colophon at the bottom right.
- Alegreya Sans for everything else: eyebrow 12px 700 uppercase with 3.2px letter-spacing in #E0A040, above a 40 x 2 px charcoal rule; subtitle 16px #75695A with measure, unit and period; axis labels 14px 500 #75695A; annotation plaques 14px, first line 700, second line italic #75695A; source 13px italic.

Layout:
- 60px side margins. Eyebrow, rule, title and subtitle in the top 140px.
- The plot panel fills the width (about x 92 to 904, y 146 to 492) and is divided into irregular panes: a jittered lattice of 8 columns by 3 rows (interior vertices moved up to about 28px horizontally and 24px vertically, border vertices moved only along the border), with roughly half the quadrilaterals split along a diagonal into two triangles.
- Each pane is filled with its tint plus a sheen overlay: a diagonal gradient from white at 55% opacity at the top left to transparent at the middle and a faint warm shadow (#7A5A2A at 8%) at the bottom right.
- Pane leads: 2px #9C9488 with round joins, clearly thinner and lighter than the 10px data came. Panel frame: 7px #2B2926 rectangle with round joins.

Axes and grid:
- No separate gridlines: the panes are the texture. The x axis is the frame's bottom border.
- Y labels to the left of the frame at round values ("10k", "20k"), each with a short 8px charcoal nub, 2.5px, round caps, touching the frame.
- X labels 30px below the frame with 7px charcoal nubs under the frame.

Marks:
- Line chart: draw each series as a came. Layer 1: a soft shadow (10px, #3A2A10 at 35%, offset 1.5, 3, blurred 2.5). Layer 2: the came, 10px #2B2926, round joins and caps, straight segments between points. Layer 3: amber glow, 3.5px #E0A040 at 75% blurred with a 2.2 standard deviation. Layer 4: a 1.4px #F2C878 core. Key points get a 5.5px radius amber dot with a 2.5px charcoal ring. For a second series use the same came with a pale blue core (#A9C4E8) instead of amber and label it directly.
- Bar chart: each bar is a vertical pane of one jewel tint with the same sheen, outlined in a 5px #2B2926 lead border with square corners, sitting on the frame's bottom edge. Split tall bars with a 2px #9C9488 horizontal came every gridline step. Values in 14px 700 Alegreya Sans on small cream plaques above the bars.

Labels and annotation:
- Annotations are small cream plaques: #F3EDE0 fill, 2.5px #2B2926 border, 3px radius, two centered lines, connected to the point by a 1.5px charcoal leader. Place the latest value on a plaque in the empty header area at the top right, with its leader running down through the frame to the end point.

Avoid: saturated pane colors or dark pane leads that fight the line, gradients on the came, thin hairline leads, regular rectangular grids, gothic blackletter type, and clip art of windows or saints.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the came reads as the darkest, thickest line on the page, the panes stay pale enough that the amber core is visible everywhere, no plaque covers the line, and the ratio in the title matches the data.
