Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lacquerware" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a polished urushi tray. Deep red-black with a soft glossy sheen, vermilion and gold forms standing on a fine gold rule, and a band of gold wave pattern along the foot like maki-e decoration.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #1E0C0B. Sheen: a diagonal overlay (top left to bottom right) from #3B1714 at 90% opacity through #2A100E at 60% (28%) to transparent (50%) to #120605 at 80%; plus a radial pool of #4A1D18 at 55% opacity centered at 30% x, 12% y, radius 55%.
- Series: vermilion #C7361F and lacquer gold #CAA24A. Each bar fills with a horizontal gradient: vermilion #A82A16, #C7361F (30%), #9E2714; gold #A9843A, #CAA24A (30%), #9C7A33.
- Cream #F1E4CC for the title and legend; #A8917A for secondary text; gold for the eyebrow, numerals and rules.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Shippori Mincho B1 800 for the title (30px, cream).
- Noto Serif JP for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 3.5px letter-spacing in gold; subtitle 15px #A8917A; legend 14px 600 cream; value numerals 13px 600 gold; axis labels 11px and category labels 14px #A8917A (latest category 600 cream).

Layout:
- Eyebrow at x 64, y 58; title y 100; subtitle y 130; legend of two 14px swatches (3px rounded tops) on the right at y 148 to 162.
- Plot from x 100 to 900 with the baseline at y 452. Source and a one-line note at y 524. The wave border fills y 548 to the bottom edge.

Axes and grid:
- Three faint gridlines in gold at 12% opacity with small 11px labels at left. The baseline is a single 1px gold rule.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped bars 34px wide with 6px between the pair, 5px rounded top corners and square bottoms. Inside each bar, 20% in from its left edge, a 3px vertical highlight stripe from 5px below the top to the base, white fading from 45% to 4% opacity. Values in 13px gold numerals 8px above each bar (a brighter #E8C877 where the second series leads).
- Line chart: a 3px vermilion line and a 3px gold line with round joins, each with a 1px lighter highlight line (white at 30%) riding 1px above it, and 4px round markers ringed with #1E0C0B; values in small gold numerals above the last points.

Texture:
- Wave border: a #150706 band from y 548 with a 1px gold rule at its top edge and a 0.6px gold rule at 50% opacity 4px below. Inside, five rows of seigaiha scales 9px apart, alternate rows offset by one radius: each scale is a filled #150706 semicircle of radius 16 (drawn row by row so lower rows overlap upper ones) with three concentric gold arcs at radii 16, 11.2 and 6.4 (0.9px at 80% opacity, then 0.6px at 55%).

Avoid: flat red that reads orange, bright white text, heavy drop shadows, more than two series colors, and letting the wave border rise into the source line.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the sheen stays soft, every bar has its highlight stripe and rounded top, the gold numerals match the data, and the title's claim is true for every year it covers.
