Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Kilim Steps" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a flat-woven kilim turned into a chart. Deep madder red cloth, woven bands of saffron, cream and indigo, crisp right angles and stepped diamond borders. Rich but orderly.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #4A1418 (madder) with a fine horizontal weave overlay (see Texture).
- Series: #E8A93A (saffron, lead series), #F0E4C8 (cream), #7F9BE0 (indigo, lightened to read on red). Each has a darker weave tone for its inner texture: #A8741C, #BFA98A and #4E67A6.
- Walnut: #6B4A2E for the border strips and the baseline. Diamond field: #5C1D21.
- Text: #F0E4C8 for the title and month labels, #C9A89A for secondary text, eyebrow in #E8A93A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Alegreya 700 for the title (30px cream, sentence case, stating the finding) and Alegreya 400 16px for the subtitle; Alegreya italic 13px for the source and footnote.
- Alegreya Sans SC for all labels: eyebrow 14px 500 with 2.4px letter-spacing; legend names 15px 700 with 1.6px letter-spacing in each series color; month labels 14px 500 cream with 1.2px letter-spacing; y labels 14px; plateau values 14 to 15px 700 in the series color.

Layout:
- A 26px walnut border strip along the full top and bottom edges, each with 1.5px cream rules 2px inside its edges and a row of stepped diamonds on a 24px pitch cycling saffron, cream, indigo: each diamond built from stacked bars 4, 12, 20, 12, 4px wide (3, 3, 2, 3, 3px tall) with a 3px walnut center.
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow y 66, title y 106, subtitle y 134, legend row y 164, plot about x 96 to 900, y 196 to 510, footer text y 556.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.8px cream at 12% opacity. Y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot.
- A 3px walnut baseline. Month labels in uppercase small caps centered in each month's slot 24px below.

Marks:
- Line chart (step): each series is a step line where every month is a flat plateau spanning its slot and changes are crisp vertical risers with mitered corners. Draw each as a woven band in four stacked strokes on the same path: 15px cream dashed 2.5 on 2.5 (these become the edge stitches), 12px solid madder (a seam), 9px solid series color, and 9px of the darker weave tone dashed 4 on 3 at 35% opacity (the weave). Fill the area under the lead series down to the baseline with a low-contrast diamond pattern: 24px tiles with an 18px #5C1D21 diamond outline (2px) and a 6px solid center diamond. Put value labels 14px above plateaus: every plateau for the lead series, first and last plateaus for the others. Keep series at least 30px apart.
- Bar chart: bars as vertical woven bands: solid series-color bars with square corners, a darker weave stripe pattern (3px stripes every 6px at 55%), a 1.5px madder seam and a dashed 1.5px cream stitch outline 1.5px outside the bar. The lead category's column sits on the diamond field; value labels in small caps above each bar.

Legend:
- Weave-block swatches: a 26 x 14px block of the series color with four 3px vertical weave stripes at 55%, framed by a 1px cream dashed (2 on 2) rectangle, then the name in the series color. Items 150px apart.

Texture:
- Weave: a 6 x 4px pattern with a 2px black band at 10% and a half-width white band at 2.5%, filling the whole ground.

Avoid: curves or diagonals in the data marks, gradients, glows, more than three series colors, and gridlines stronger than the weave.

When you're done, render the chart and check that step corners are crisp right angles, the stitches show evenly along both band edges, adjacent bands never touch, plateau labels clear the band above, and the border diamonds are evenly spaced.
