Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Journal Volume" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an accounting journal bound in charcoal. Ruled week columns with alternating faint banding, warm gold and sand entries, and an elegant serif headline over monospace figures.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #1A1A1A (charcoal). Alternating column band: #212121. Column rules: #333333. Horizontal rules: #2E2E2E.
- Series: #CA8A04 (muted gold, manual, the emphasis series, drawn at the bottom of stacks) and #E7D8B1 (pale sand, automated).
- Primary text: #EDE6D6. Secondary text: #9A968C. Group labels: #6E6B64.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond with lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums) for the title (600, 36px, #EDE6D6, stating the finding) and the subtitle (italic 500, 18px, #9A968C).
- Red Hat Mono for everything else: eyebrow 500 12px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in gold; legend 13px; axis labels 12px; group labels ("WEEK 1") 10.5px uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing; the callout 600 13px in #EDE6D6 with a second 12px line in gold; highlighted category labels 700 in gold; source 12px.

Layout:
- Eyebrow at y 58, title at y 100, subtitle at y 128, legend of 12px square swatches at y 152, left margin 56px.
- Plot from x 104 to 904, y 196 to 506. Each week (or other natural group) is a ruled column: 1px #333333 vertical rules at the group boundaries running from 14px above the plot to below the group labels, with every other group shaded #212121.
- Category labels 20px below the baseline, group labels 42px below. Source bottom left at y 582; a short note bottom right giving the baseline used in the title.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal rules 1px #2E2E2E at round values with labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot; a 1px #9A968C baseline.

Marks:
- Bar chart: stacked vertical bars 62% of the slot wide, square corners, gold on the bottom and sand on top with a 1.5px charcoal gap between them. Label the peak with a thin 0.8px #EDE6D6 leader (a 2px dot at the bar, one diagonal, then a horizontal run) ending under a two-line callout right-aligned at the end of the rule.
- Line chart: a 2.5px gold line for the emphasis series and a 1.5px sand line for the other, straight segments, no markers except r 3.5 dots at the peak, with the same ruled week columns, banding and leader callout.

Avoid: bright yellow, pure white, rounded corners, gradients, glow, and more than two data colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stacks sum to the totals quoted in the callout, the leader does not cross any bar, the column bands align exactly with group boundaries, and the title's multiple is arithmetically right.
