Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Scientific Journal" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from a peer-reviewed paper. Sober, exact and dense with statistical honesty: every mean carries its uncertainty, and the caption does the talking.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FFFFFF everywhere. No tinted plot area.
- Ink (axes box, ticks, tick labels, axis titles, caption, significance stars): #1A1A1A.
- Reference lines (zero, no-effect): #595959, dashed.
- Series 1 (control, baseline, reference group): #3F3F3F, a near-black gray.
- Series 2 (the treatment or the group the finding is about): #B33A2B, a restrained brick red. This is the only real color. A third series, if unavoidable, is #8C8C8C with a triangle marker; never add another hue.
- Confidence bands: the series color at 16% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts): STIX Two Text for everything.
- Tick labels 16px regular; axis titles 17px regular in sentence case with the unit in parentheses, e.g. "Escape latency (s)". Use a true minus sign (U+2212) for negative numbers.
- Panel letters: lowercase bold 28px ("a", "b"), top-left, outside the axes box, aligned with its top edge.
- Legend: 16px regular.
- Caption lead-in: bold 18px, "Fig. 2 | " followed by the finding as a full sentence ending in a period.
- Caption body: 16px regular, 25px line spacing, panel references in bold ("a,", "b,"), statistical symbols in italic (n, P, t).

Layout:
- The figure occupies the top ~75% of the canvas; the caption sits below it, left-aligned at x = 40, under a 0.8px #1A1A1A rule spanning the full figure width.
- Where it helps, split the figure into two panels: a wide main panel (about 460px) and a narrower derived panel (about 210px, e.g. difference from control, ratio, or residuals) sharing the x-axis meaning. With a single chart, keep one panel labeled "a".
- Rotated y-axis title centered on the panel height, about 50px left of the axes box. X-axis title centered, 48px below the box.
- The caption carries what would otherwise be a title and subtitle: the bold lead-in states the finding, the body states the measure, what bands and error bars mean, sample size, test used, and ends with "Source: ...".

Axes and grid:
- Fully boxed axes: a closed 1.2px #1A1A1A rectangle around each plot. No gridlines at all.
- Ticks point INWARD on all four sides: major ticks 6px at 1px, minor ticks 3.5px at 0.8px halfway between majors on the y-axis. Top and right ticks mirror bottom and left. Labels only on left and bottom, 9px from the box.
- Pad the x domain by half a step on each side so the first and last points sit inside the box.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2px straight segments (no smoothing) through the means. Markers at every observation: series 1 open circles (r 4.6, white fill, 1.6px stroke), series 2 filled squares (8.8px). Error bars (s.e.m.) as 1.2px vertical lines with 8px caps. A 95% confidence band behind each line, series color at 16% opacity, no outline.
- Bar chart: narrow bars (about 40% of the band) with a 1.2px #1A1A1A outline; series 1 filled white, series 2 filled #B33A2B at 85%. Error bars with caps on every bar, and the individual observations overplotted as small open circles (r 2.5) jittered across the bar.
- Significance: stars (*, **, ***) centered 8px above the upper confidence limit of the highest series at each tested point, 17px. Only star a point whose interval supports it.

Legend: top-right (or whichever corner is empty) inside the axes box, no frame. Each entry is a 30 x 18 px band swatch at 16% opacity with the 2px line and the marker drawn over it, then the label 10px to the right.

Avoid: titles above the figure, gridlines, background fills, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, bold colors, more than two hues, outward ticks, and sans-serif type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the box is closed with ticks pointing in on all four sides, every mean has a band or error bar, the stars agree with the intervals, and the caption's numbers match the data.
