Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Intaglio" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the reverse of an engraved banknote seen under low light. A violet-black field covered in hair-fine engraving, one silver line, crosshatching that thickens toward the data, microtext rules and an oval guilloche cartouche around the title. Precise, historical, a little solemn.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #150F1F, with a radial lift to #1E1630 in the upper middle.
- Silver for the data line, the title, markers and annotations: #D9DCE5.
- Pale lilac for the eyebrow, subtitle, axis labels, microtext, frame and cartouche rings: #B8AAD8.
- Engraving violet for the background line field: #6F6296 at 22% opacity.
- Cartouche fill: #2A2140 at 60% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cinzel 700 for the title: 32px, 2px letter-spacing, silver, a short capitalized finding ("Fixed for 64 Years") set inside the cartouche. Cinzel 700 18px for the end value label; Cinzel 400 10px with 3px letter-spacing for a small "SPECIMEN · REVERSE" imprint at the lower left.
- Cormorant for everything else, keeping its old-style figures: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 3.5px letter-spacing in lilac inside the cartouche above the title; subtitle 19px italic 500 in lilac spelling out the finding with numbers; measure line 14.5px 500 in lilac at 80% opacity; axis labels 15px 600 lilac; annotations 15 to 16px italic 600 in silver; source 13px italic.

Layout:
- A double hairline frame: 0.8px lilac at 55% opacity inset 16px, and 0.4px at 40% inset 21px.
- The cartouche is centered at the top (center y 84): a ground-colored ellipse (rx 262, ry 60), a woven guilloche oval of five phase-shifted rings (0.5px lilac at 85%, base radius 60 stretched 4.3x horizontally and 0.92x vertically, 64 lobes of amplitude 3.2), then an inner ellipse (rx 238, ry 47) with the cartouche fill and a 0.8px lilac outline holding the eyebrow and title.
- Subtitle at y 172 and measure line at y 194, centered below the cartouche. Plot from x 96 to 880, y 214 to 494. Source bottom right, imprint bottom left, both at y 566.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines are microtext rules: the currency name repeated ("ALDMARK CROWN · ALDMARK CROWN · ...") in Cormorant 600 at 5.2px, lilac at 55%, justified to the full plot width at each gridline value. No solid gridlines.
- Y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot; a 0.9px lilac baseline with 5px ticks and year labels 24px below it.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.2px silver line with straight segments and round joins, over a 4px silver copy at 35% opacity blurred by 3px for a faint sheen. The area beneath is engraved in three layers clipped to the area: vertical hairlines (0.55px every 5px) at 30% opacity across the whole area; +45 degree lines (0.6px every 4px) at 40% within 70px below the line; and -45 degree lines (0.65px every 3px) at 55% within 26px below the line, so the crosshatch grows denser toward the line. End point: a silver dot r 4.5 with its value in Cinzel on a small ground-colored plate so the microtext does not run through it. Annotate key regimes directly in italic silver.
- Bar chart: bars with no solid fill, engraved instead: a 1px silver outline, vertical hairlines inside at 30%, plus the -45 degree dense hatch in the top 26px of each bar, so each bar looks darker at its top edge. Bars 60% of the band width, square corners, value labels in Cinzel 700 above.

Texture:
- Engraved ground: concentric ellipses every 7px radiating from the lower right (center near 820, 470, stretched 1.25x horizontally), each with a tiny 1.6px sine ripple of 36 lobes, 0.45px in engraving violet at 22% opacity, covering the whole canvas behind the chart.

Avoid: bright colors, gold, solid area fills, sans-serif type, heavy gridlines, glow stronger than a sheen, and letting microtext run through any label.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the crosshatch visibly darkens toward the line, the microtext reads as a fine dotted rule at thumbnail size, the cartouche rings do not touch the title, and the subtitle's numbers match the data.
