Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Indirect Recovery" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a schedule from a university finance office's cost study. Warm paper, ledger hairlines, a double rule under the heading and a boxed reference note: sober, precise and quietly bookish.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FCFAF6 (warm white).
- Primary series, reference lines and the eyebrow: #7F1D1D (maroon). Secondary series (in its own panel): #6B6B6B (gray).
- Gap shading: #F3E4DF with fine 45-degree maroon hatching at 22% opacity (6px pitch, 1.2px lines).
- Ink: #2A2320. Secondary text: #7A716A. Ledger lines: #E6DFD3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Source Serif 4 for the title (600, 29px, #2A2320, stating the finding), value labels (700, 15 to 17px, maroon), italic notes and the folio (italic 13 to 15px).
- Libre Franklin for the eyebrow (600, 11px, uppercase, 1.8px letter-spacing, maroon), subtitle (13.5px #7A716A), legend (600, 13px), axis labels (12px; the primary panel's in maroon, the secondary panel's in gray), and the source (11.5px).

Layout:
- 48px margins. Eyebrow y 58, title y 96, subtitle y 124, then a double rule: 1px ink at y 140 and 0.6px ink at y 143.5.
- A legend row at y 172 on the left (line samples 30px long) and a boxed note on the right: 1px maroon border, no radius, a 9.5px 700 tracked caps label and a 13px serif line with the reference value.
- Two stacked ledger panels from x 104 to 840 sharing one period axis, never a right-hand second axis: the primary measure from y 212 to 322, then about 44px of clear space, then the secondary measure with its reference and hatched gap from y 366 to 486. Each panel has its own left axis and a thin double vertical margin rule in maroon at 35% opacity (two 0.8px lines 3px apart) on its left edge, like ledger paper.
- Footer: a #E6DFD3 rule at y 540, source left, italic schedule folio ("Schedule F-2") right.

Axes and grid:
- Ledger lines every half step: majors 0.9px #E6DFD3, minors 0.5px. Each panel's bottom line 1px ink. Keep the reference line and its hatched gap in the secondary panel only, so nothing implies a relation between the two measures.
- Labels only at majors, right-aligned 14px left of each panel: maroon in the primary panel, gray in the secondary panel.

Marks:
- Line chart: primary series as a thick 4.5px maroon line with round joins and caps, dots (r 4.5 to 5.5, 2px paper ring) at the first and last points with serif value labels. Secondary series as a thin 1.5px gray line with small hollow squares (5px, paper fill, 1.2px gray stroke). A target or contractual reference drawn as a flat 2px maroon dotted line (dash 1 4, round caps) with a 12px 600 maroon label. Shade the gap between the secondary series and the reference with the hatch and label it in a small paper-filled box ("LEAKAGE" in 11px 700 caps, 2px tracking, plus an italic serif gap value). A thin maroon bracket at the last point spans the gap.
- Bar chart: slender maroon columns (40% of the slot) on the ledger grid, the secondary measure as gray hollow-square markers on a thin gray line in its own lower panel with the same dotted reference and hatched gap, never over the bars.

Avoid: dual axes, lines of different units crossing on one plot, rounded corners, drop shadows, bright colors, heavy gridlines, and any fill other than the hatched gap.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each panel has its own axis and clear space from the other, the gap value equals reference minus last value, the growth percentage in the title is computed from first and last values, and labels have a paper halo where they cross the hatch or a line.
